Snow holidays require a proportionately higher budget than summer vacations. Unless you adopt these easy-to-follow tips.

1. Change destination. Think of off-the-beaten-track destinations. You can also ski in excellent conditions in Bulgaria (Bansko) or Slovakia (Jasna). And, above all, at far less expensive rates. The same advantageous rates apply in certain regions of Italy (Livigno), France (Cauterets) or Austria (Niederau).

2. Forget the ski factories. Choose smaller resorts. They're less expensive, less crowded and also friendlier. And generally speaking, shopping, après-ski activities, accommodation and general shopping will be cheaper too. In France, there's Pralognan - which overlooks the Vanoise park - but also Montclar in the Southern Alps, Aussois in Maurienne and Orelle, which offer cheaper access to the 3 Valleys ski area.

3. Look for packages at €10 a day. Yes, they still exist, but in the most confidential resorts. Ski areas that are often less than 30 km long. Ideal for beginners or for leisurely skiing. La Féclaz, Col de Rousset, Les Habères, La Semnoz, Le Mont Serein, Larche, Le Grand Puy, Le Désert d'Entremont... all these French resorts offer ski passes for between €10 and €25 a day.

4. Sustainable travel. Good for the environment, but also for your wallet if you book early. By train (don't forget the night trains with couchettes), you can reach many areas in France, Switzerland and Austria. And arrive rested at your destination. Many resorts offer free transfers to the ski areas. But also substantial discounts on ski passes, as in Avoriaz or Morzine.

5. Take advantage of our offers. These include free public transport, reduced-price ski passes for children or hotel bookings, activity passes, and free or reduced prices on certain activities, as offered by the Verbier resort in Switzerland.

6. Long live second-hand. When it comes to winter sports, too, you can treat yourself to little-used equipment, recycled and refurbished to save money on your stay. Borrowing or buying equipment second-hand means avoiding the cost of renting or buying new equipment, which is often expensive for a rather limited use. We're thinking of online platforms and addresses that are open just about everywhere. Even some brands are playing the game, offering second-hand and/or refurbished clothing.

7. Reservez in advance. A rule that also applies to winter sports. Not only do you benefit from the widest choice, but also from the best conditions. With discounts of up to 15 to 20 %.

8. Opt for activities other than skiing. It's not all about skiing and snowboarding. Today's destinations offer a host of wonderful alternatives. Hiking, snowshoeing, wildlife observation, various workshops or relaxing in the fresh air, swimming pools and spas in the hotel or residence... so many free or low-cost activities to lighten your holiday budget.
