Panama

From coast to coast

A small country that links Central and South America, Panama is becoming increasingly fashionable.

And it has no reason to be ashamed of its famous Costa Rican neighbor. Here, too, the beaches are dreamlike, nature lush and the flora and fauna breathtakingly diverse. In total contrast to Panama City, divided in two between its magnificently preserved and restored old town and its ultra-modern districts that have sprung up like mushrooms in just a few years. The miracle of the canal, recently doubled by a new, even wider waterway, is the real cash cow of a country that is, in the final analysis, terribly endearing.

Ideal for

Seaside holidays, honeymoons, golf, water sports, scuba diving, outdoor sports, trekking, culture.

Did you know?

That the canal's lowest toll (36 cents) was paid by an American who swam across it in 1928.

The must-haves

  1. Visit the famous canal, stopping at the huge locks through which huge container ships pass.
  2. Stay in Panama City, if possible half in the old town and half in the contemporary districts.
  3. Head off into the jungle to meet the Ameras Indians.
  4. Stay with the Kunas Indians in the San Blas archipelago.
  5. Explore the Bocas del Toro archipelago, in the northwest of the country, in the Caribbean Sea.

Between us

  1. The official currency is the American dollar.
  2. The panama is also a hat. Which has nothing to do with the country, since it's made in Ecuador.
  3. Panama produces some of the world's most expensive rums, as well as a coffee, Geisha, which fetches over $30 a cup.
  4. The craziest way to discover Panama City by night is on a «chiva», a traditional Colombian bus outrageously decorated and DJ-ed.
  5. There are more skyscrapers in Panama City than in Los Angeles and San Francisco combined!

When to go?

Panama is a very green country, with high rainfall. December to May is the dry season, which is also sunnier.

Packing

Light, casual clothing, but also rain protection (umbrella, no raincoat because of the heat).
