Albania

Europe's best-kept secret

After enduring one of the longest and harshest dictatorships in modern history, Albania is slowly opening up. And trying to break away from the often unfounded prejudices that define it. Welcome to a surprising and endearing country, one of the most mysterious in Europe.

Spared from mass tourism, Albania seems to have been frozen in time. Its villages, mountains and coasts have all retained their authenticity. And it's not unusual to find yourself - or almost - alone on the beach. Albania is also an inexpensive country, without sacrificing comfort or quality. A positive survival of communism, hospitality is another strong point of this destination, which has not always had a good reputation. With Catholics in the north, Orthodox in the south, Muslims and 500,000 Bektachis, the Albanians have everything it takes to clash. And yet, this country is both peaceful and fierce, just like its nature, one of the wildest and most breathtaking on the continent.

Ideal for

Seaside, cultural, outdoor sports, water sports, trekking, photography.

Did you know?

In 1990, when the country began to open up slowly, Albania had just 2,000 vehicles!

The must-haves

  1. Visit Berat, the city of 1001 windows, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The «white city» was built from the stones of the ancient city of Apollonia and stretches elegantly along both banks of the Osum.
  2. Discover Butrint's Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian archaeological remains. The site is surrounded by a superb national park, between sea, lagoon and mountains. A place that inspired Cicero, Racine, Lord Byron and Eugène Delacroix.
  3. See Gjirokastra, Albania's most beautiful town, with its cobbled streets lined with ancient houses, the ‘kulle’, often designed as small defensive castles.
  4. Bathing in the turquoise waters of the Albanian Riviera.
  5. Hiking in Llogara National Park, between sea, mountains and forest.

Between us

  1. Albania enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year. By the end of February, temperatures have risen to over 20 degrees.
  2. Sometimes it's hard to make yourself understood here. Note, for example, that to say «yes», an Albanian will nod «no», and vice-versa.
  3. The hotel business offers excellent value for money, and there are some very fine, well-equipped establishments to choose from.
  4. More than 700,000 bunkers are scattered across the country. Some have been converted into restaurants, discotheques or warehouses.
  5. Make sure you always have cash on hand: bankcards are still not widely used in shops.
  6. The road network is not in very good condition, and some drivers are reckless. Be careful if you rent a car.

When to go?

From April to October, the weather is generally fine. From late to early September, temperatures can be quite hot, especially on the coasts.

Packing

The climate is Mediterranean on the coast and cooler in the mountains. So pack light clothing, a swimsuit but also warmer layers and rain gear. Good footwear for mountain walking. And above all, sun protection.
