Argentina

A country of great spectacle

Spanning thousands of kilometers from tropical rainforest to Patagonian glaciers, Argentina is a country of immense diversity, but also one of the planet's last great wildernesses.

It's hard to imagine the variety of landscapes you'll encounter in Argentina. Wide canyons sculpted by time, high volcanoes with snow-capped peaks, tropical forests, cactus deserts, salars as far as the eye can see, some of the world's most extensive glaciers, high plateaus of yellow grass or lush meadows as in Ireland, this country is almost a continent unto itself, and its remoteness at the very edge of the world has allowed it to retain a great deal of mystery. Beware, you're in for an eyeful here.

Ideal for

Cultural, trekking, wildlife watching, nature holidays, horse riding, cooking classes, dance classes, city trips, winter sports, wine tourism, golf.

Did you know?

Argentina is the only country where you can learn and practice polo, the «sport of kings», in a very accessible way.

The must-haves

  1. Buenos Aires, of course: the vast metropolis on the edge of the pampas is packed with fascinating neighborhoods, unforgettable addresses and must-see sites.
  2. The northwest, straddling canyons and Andean peaks, remains one of Argentina's most authentic regions.
  3. Iguaçu Falls, one of the most powerful and impressive waterfalls on the planet.
  4. Explore the vastness of Patagonia on foot, by car or, better still, on horseback like the gauchos.
  5. Observe the almost Antarctic fauna of the Valdes Peninsula.

Between us

  1. As you'll soon discover, Argentines feel much closer to their Spanish and Italian cousins than to other Americans, even Latinos.
  2. Beware of «soroche», the altitude sickness specific to the Andes. To avoid it, always drink plenty and eat regularly but lightly. Think about it in the evening if you're going on an excursion the next day.
  3. The first gauchos were nomads, often of mixed race, from Brazil, Chile and Paraguay. Their strange garb was a blend of many European terroirs: baggy pants and Cossack boots, Andalusian hats and Basque berets.
  4. Mate, Argentinian-style tea, is the national drink and can be sipped at any time of day.

When to go?

During the austral summer, which corresponds to our winter (we're in the southern hemisphere and the seasons are reversed).

Packing

It all depends on the region you're visiting. If you're traveling to the north of the country, where the climate is tropical, you'll need lightweight clothing made from natural materials and rain gear. If you're staying in Buenos Aires, summer is in full swing from December to March. From June to August, you'll need to add a few sweaters to your suitcase. In Patagonia, you'll need to cover up because the wind blows almost all year round and the weather is cooler, even very cold in winter.

When to go?

Climate Argentina - Buenos Aires
There's no ideal time of year to travel in Argentina, as the country is so elongated between north and south. In the north, it's always hot and dry. In the south, in Patagonia, the seasons are more marked. For a mix of the 2 regions, the ideal time is during the austral summer, from March to April.
