Austria

Bold and imperial

Mozart, Sissi, Klimt, Freud, Schubert, Strauss, Vienna, balls, palaces, mountains and lakes, skiing, music and tradition - Austria has it all. A destination that appeals to families as much as to fans of active leisure or culture.

Austria is not one country, but many. Starting with its capital, which has preserved many vestiges of its imperial past. Salzburg, Graz, Innsbruck, Bregenz... so many cities where audacity and artistic life have not broken the harmony that envelops the well-preserved streets and squares. Austrians love to party and have fun, and you can feel that the Mediterranean is not so far away. But to get to the heart of picture-postcard Austria, with its chalets, alpine pastures, snow-capped peaks and skin-tight trousers, you have to head west, towards Carinthia and Tyrol. Tyrol is also the land of wellness, hot springs and the art of outdoor living.

Austria

Ideal for

Cultural, golf, hiking, city trip, spa, winter sports, water sports, cooking classes, wine tourism.

Did you know?

That St Peter Stifskulinarium, located in Salzburg's Old Town, is Europe's oldest restaurant, in operation since the year... 803.

The must-haves

  1. Vienna is one of the world's most livable cities. In summer as well as in winter, it's the perfect mix of clichés, trends and desires.
  2. Enjoy the mildness of Carinthia's lakes, often bordered by beaches, starting with the Millstättersee, whose waters warm up very quickly as summer approaches.
  3. Take the Grossglockner road, Austria's highest, by car (or motorcycle).
  4. Stop or, better still, stay in Hallstatt, a nugget of a village wedged between lake and mountain. With its houses on stilts and charming church, it's impossible not to take some great photos.
  5. Follow in Mozart's footsteps through the streets of Salzburg, a city that beats to the rhythm of music festivals.
  6. Ski down the Tyrolean valleys, enjoy the often lively après-ski and don't forget Innsbruck.

Between us

  1. Austria invented the Kinderhotels concept (www.kinderhotels.com), where everything is designed with families in mind. Today, this hotel group is already attracting a second generation of children and parents.
  2. Cured meats, cheeses, pastas, meats and pastries, Austria is a (too) good place to eat: be daring and try the regional specialties. As for wines, there are some nuggets to be found here too.
  3. Don't be surprised, many Austrians still wear their traditional garb: skin pants and vests for the men, colorful skirts and blouses (Dirndl) for the ladies. At the hotel, in the shops, but also at festivals, for mass... a folklore of which they are proud.

When to go?

Each season has its own charm and is suited to a particular type of stay. Summer is for hiking in the mountains, spring and autumn for a citytrip to Vienna or Salzburg. But winter is perhaps the most magical, between Christmas markets and the pleasures of skiing.

Packing

The season of the trip is very important, as the climate varies so much throughout the year. So plan to dress in layers that can be removed or added. Good shoes if you're going to the mountains, and always a scarf or wrap. Hat and gloves, except in summer, when the weather can be torrid, especially on the plains.
