Belgium

The unexpected in the heart of Europe

The cobbled streets, the smell of hot waffles, the conversations in French, Dutch and English that sometimes intermingle... Belgium is a country full of surprises. Here, every town has its own character, every village tells its own story and every gourmet break becomes an unforgettable memory. In the north, Belgium is the flat country sung by Jacques Brel, but which becomes extremely hilly once you cross the Meuse. Travelling in Belgium means accepting to be surprised, to discover the unexpected at the turn of a busy square or a forest path. Welcome to a country that doesn't just seduce: it intrigues, amuses and, above all... astonishes.

Ideal for

Cultural, shopping, golf, outdoor sports, hiking, seaside, city trip, gastronomy.

Did you know?

Belgium is the country with the most castles per square kilometer in the world!

The must-haves

  1. Marvel at the thousands of details on the facades of Brussels' Grand Place, considered the most beautiful in the world.
  2. Experience Belgian culture and soul at a Carnival (Binche's is the only one of its kind in the world), a people's fair, a festival or a parade of giants.
  3. Step back in time through the narrow streets of medieval Bruges and discover the riches of the Flemish Renaissance. But don't miss out on Ghent, the other nugget from the same era.
  4. Discover why Belgium is known as the home of surrealism, with works by Magritte, Ensor and Delvaux on display in a number of major museums.
  5. Explore the splendid Ardenne forests and charming villages, and climb to the country's highest peak, the vast peat plateau of the Hautes-Fagnes.
  6. Taste the chocolates, waffles, beers and countless local specialities that characterize almost every town and village.

Between us

  1. Don't understand the Belgian institutional system? Don't worry, Belgians often have trouble too. But don't hesitate to ask them for explanations, which they will often do with a great deal of humor.
  2. Typical Belgian street food: baraques à frites (or «fritkots»). Some of them are even listed in the major gastronomic guides.
  3. As a multilingual country, Belgium can be confusing for travellers, starting with the road signs, which change language depending on the region you're visiting.
  4. Belgians love conviviality: in restaurants, bars (cafés), shops and even on the street or while waiting for a train, discussions can quickly get underway.

When to go?

All year round to discover its historic cities. But from spring to early autumn for the outdoor life and the beach. The Belgian climate is variable: summer can be hot, with sudden periods of cooler, rainier weather. Winter can be relatively mild, but also harsher in the Ardennes.

Packing

Always pack clothes for both good weather and rain. Choose lightweight items in summer and warmer ones in winter.
