A tiny country wedged between vast Mexico and Guatemala, Belize is a special new destination full of surprises.
Belize is one of those countries that few can locate on a world map. Belize is three times smaller than Belgium and doesn't get much publicity. Far from the main air or land routes, it's an incredible melting pot of ethnicities, with a sometimes old-fashioned, very Caribbean atmosphere, not far removed from buccaneering films. For its coasts, lined with immense reefs and a myriad of mangrove-covered islets - the cayes - were long infested with pirates. Until the British brought order to the area and founded British Honduras, harvesting mahogany and growing sugar cane. Now Belize since its independence in 1981, it is the only Central American country to retain English as its official language.
