Bolivia

The country close to the sky

You're dreaming of an authentic destination. Saturated with color, music and tradition, Bolivia is paradoxically one of the continent's least-known countries. And that's what makes it so charming.

Wedged between the giants of South America, Bolivia is undoubtedly the continent's most dreamlike country. Colonial towns enriched by silver mines, the women's colourful costumes, the music and warm atmosphere, the peaks of the Andes and skies so azure they become inky, the postcard is reality here. We sometimes forget that most of the country is covered by the Amazon rainforest. That the Altiplano is home to the immense Lake Titicaca, but also to gigantic salars. We warn you that, as is often the case in South America, it will be difficult to make choices!

Bolivia

Ideal for

Cultural, trekking, outdoor sports, safari, cooking classes, language courses, mountaineering, wine tourism.

Did you know?

That men and women dressed as zebras humorously help to maintain order and regulate traffic in certain cities.

The must-haves

  1. See La Paz, the world's highest capital, and fly over it in a cable car.
  2. Criss-cross the salt flats of Uyuni and contemplate the palette of colors at sunset.
  3. Visit the colorful lagoons of South Lipez and follow the Jewel Route.
  4. Take part in the Oruro Carnival.
  5. For the more adventurous, take a mountain bike down the Route de la Mort.
  6. Attend a ‘lucha libre’ match between cholitas in traditional dress.

Between us

  1. Don't settle for the classic Bolivian altiplano. The country is truly varied, and much of it remains unexplored by travellers. Examples: the Chaco, the wine regions or the Jesuit missions in the Chiquitos region.
  2. Not very polyglot, Bolivians will appreciate a few words in Spanish, especially polite ones.
  3. El Alto is the world's highest airport: 4062 m above sea level. You can feel it as soon as you step off the plane.
  4. Acute mountain sickness can spoil part of your stay. To avoid it, drink plenty of water, coca tea and rest.
  5. To get around, nothing beats a chauffeur-driven car, bus, train or plane.

When to go?

April to October, the dry season. However, you should always bear in mind that the climate varies greatly between the hot, humid Amazon, the temperate zones in the center and the cool, dry altiplano, which can even be cold as you climb towards the peaks of the Andes.

Packing

For all varieties of Bolivian climate. With the exception of the Amazon, you'll need to cover up, sometimes very warmly, in the Andes and at high altitude. A few items of technical clothing and good sturdy footwear will do on the high plateaus. Mosquito repellent (anti-malarial in low-lying areas), sunglasses and sun cream.
