Brazil

All the colors of the world

Endless beaches, endless forests, rivers as wide as lakes, the largest swamp on the planet... Brazil is a country of superlatives.

A vast country-continent bursting with energy, Brazil is no slouch when it comes to colorful, contrasting images. However, it's impossible to see it all in one go, as nature here reaches extremes of excess. Starting with the immense Amazon, crossed by the longest river on the planet. This excess is echoed in the sprawling cities of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. And in the intensity of its festivals and carnivals, where even the poorest people dress in the most sparkling costumes. Brazil, a country where even soccer becomes a dance...

Ideal for

Seaside, adventure, trekking, language courses, cooking classes, golf, water sports, honeymoon.

Did you know?

That almost all cars in Brazil run on ethanol, an alcohol produced from sugar cane.

The must-haves

  1. See Rio, an incredible succession of spiky bays and beaches, with its rugged relief and perfect chaos.
  2. Travel through Minas Gerais, visiting opulent colonial cities such as Tiradentes, Mariana, Diamantina and Ouro Preto.
  3. Explore the Pantanal, the world's largest biosphere reserve and the planet's largest wetland.
  4. Visit Salvador de Bahia, the Black Rome of Brazil, famous for its carnival, capoeira schools and gastronomy.
  5. Explore the Lençois Maranhenses park, a spectacular ocean of white dunes punctuated by turquoise lakes.

Between us

  1. For city-to-city travel, flying can be expensive. A cheaper and safer alternative is the bus, which will take you across the country.
  2. Visiting Brazil requires a little common sense: in the city, leave your jewelry and passport in the hotel safe, and avoid off-centre districts and little-frequented streets, especially in the evening.
  3. On the southern edge of the Pantanal, Bonito is renowned for its waterfalls, caves and crystal-clear lakes. An ecotourism paradise.
  4. You see them everywhere in Brazil: young or retired, guards who, for a few reals, look after your car or help you park.

When to go?

Given the vastness of Brazil, it all depends on the region of destination. In the Amazon, the less rainy season extends from June to October. On the Nordeste coast and around Salvador de Bahia, the period between September and mid-December is best. Around Rio, the austral winter (June to September) is cooler, but so is the sea. The interior of the country, in Minas Gerais and around Brasilia, has a constant climate, with a dry season between May and September, which is also cooler.

Packing

Lightweight clothing, not forgetting swimsuits and pareos, because here, whenever possible, we spend the day in beachwear. And don't forget long-sleeved clothing for evenings and mosquito attacks. In Rio and further south, you'll need woollens for the evenings, or even an anorak for the winter season.
