Cape Verde

At the crossroads of three continents

Tired of the overcrowded Canaries? Opt for Cape Verde, an archipelago of ten islands lost in the Atlantic, off the coast of Senegal. A country with a mixed identity between three continents: Africa, Europe and America.

Volcanoes, colonial cities, scorching dunes or humid forests, each island is a journey within a journey. One is green, windy and steep, while the other is arid, sun-scorched and flat. But there's one constant: the Cape Verdean population is warm, imbued with «morabeza», a blend of kindness and benevolence, lively and mixed, but above all passionate about music and dance. Of course, there's Cesária Evora, the barefoot diva who put Cape Verdean music on the world map. But you could almost say that here, every inhabitant is a potential artist and never misses an opportunity to party.

Ideal for

A seaside holiday, a honeymoon, hiking, scuba diving to observe stingrays, sharks and whales, sailing (kite surfing, sailing, windsurfing...) and surfing.

Did you know?

That on the island of Fogo, hundreds of inhabitants have blond hair and light eyes, all descendants of a French nobleman who settled there in the 19th century.

The must-haves

  1. Climb to the top of Fogo volcano, the only remaining active volcano in the archipelago.
  2. Water sports on the island of Sal.
  3. Hike the dizzying trails of lush Santo Antão.
  4. Explore Mindelo, Cesária Evora's home town and the archipelago's most charming.
  5. Sit on a terrace and listen to morna or the coladeira.

Between us

The Cape Verde islands are home to wildlife with very rare species, including the Razo Lark, of which only 250 specimens remain.
Take a dive into the Morabeza Hotel's discotheque with its old-fashioned charm: it's the oldest in the archipelago.
Don't carry too much local currency (escudo) as it's impossible to exchange it for euros.
4. In Cape Verde, it is customary to dress very well when going to a restaurant.

When to go?

All year round, although the June-October period is rainier.

Packing

Light clothing, but also a few sweaters and, above all, a windbreaker, as the wind rarely dies down here (it's less strong in July and August). Bring sandals for the beach, but also good shoes if you're going hiking.
