Chile

Between desert and glaciers

This country is so vast and varied in its landscapes and climates that it's hard to describe.

Chile is a strange geography! This country, the longest and narrowest on the planet, unfurls its often overwhelmingly beautiful landscapes over 4300 kilometers, from Peru to Cape Horn. Mountains among the highest peaks in the Andes, deserts among the most arid on the planet, forests where the strange araucarias grow, vineyards too (Chile is one of the world's largest wine producers), fjords and myriads of islands. Not forgetting, thousands of miles away in the Pacific, the strange Easter Island. In other words, travellers will be spoilt for choice when it comes to creating a travel log to their liking.

Chile

Ideal for

Cultural, trekking, outdoor sports, mountaineering, photography, language courses.

Did you know?

A Chilean lawyer, poet and astronomer in his spare time, declared himself the owner of the Moon in 1954. In 1969, the U.S. President officially asked him on behalf of NASA for permission to land on the Moon.

The must-haves

  1. Discover the Atacama Desert, a strange mineral universe that displays the colors of the materials spewed out by its volcanoes. And stargaze in its pure atmosphere.
  2. Set foot on Easter Island and try to unravel the mysteries of its immense statues.
  3. Enter the heart of the Patagonian Andes and visit Torres del Paine National Park.
  4. Stroll down Valparaiso's sloping streets and take to the skies aboard its funicular railways.
  5. Stroll through the contrasting national parks of the north of the country, such as Lauca National Park, and admire its snow-capped volcanoes and strange fauna: vicuñas, alpacas and viscaches (a variety of chinchilla).

Between us

  1. If you're visiting a lot of national parks, think about the discount card offered by CONAF, the organization that manages the parks, which quickly pays for itself.
  2. In northern Chile, at altitude, you can suffer from ‘soroche’, the Andean sickness (nausea, difficulty breathing). As a preventive measure, drink plenty of water, rest and eat lightly.
  3. Beware of the wind in Patagonia! Never park facing or into the wind, or you'll damage the door hinges.
  4. The cost of living in Chile is around 35% lower than in Western Europe.

When to go?

Although Chile can be visited all year round, depending on the region, the recommended period is from October to March.

Packing

It all depends on the season and the region you're visiting. In the austral summer, light clothing for all regions, not forgetting something to cover up and rain gear in Patagonia. In winter, you'll want to layer up in the central and southern regions, putting on gloves and a hat, but keeping things light for the north. Good, sturdy footwear and sun protection for all seasons.
