The third largest country on the planet, still shrouded in a certain mystery, China is a multifaceted destination. In terms of both climate and landscape. Many journeys within a journey await you. Each time, the traveler enters another dimension, steeped in tradition and deeply rooted in a thousand-year-old culture. For although China is a country with a strong focus on the future, you don't have to go far to find a way of life straight out of an ancient tale or a print.

The must-haves

Walking on the Great Wall of China, at least on a small portion of its 8,000 km length.

Between us

Chinese cuisine is incredibly varied. To put it simply, in the north, the dishes are strong in flavor, in the east, vegetarian or seafood dishes are preferred, in the south, steamed dishes and in the west, very spicy dishes.
Avoid traveling to China during local holidays: city dwellers return to their villages, traffic is heavy on the roads and sites of interest are overrun.
China remains an inexpensive country, especially for restaurants and transport. Many cultural sites are free.
Never adopt a condescending or arrogant attitude that will make your Chinese interlocutor lose face.
The language barrier is quite high in China. Ideally, you should travel with a guide-interpreter and/or learn some rudimentary Mandarin. A good language app can also work wonders.

When to go?

Given the size of the country and the variety of climates, it all depends on the area you choose. For Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai, spring and autumn are ideal. Winter in the northern regions can be freezing, and summer hot and humid further south.

Packing

What you pack will depend greatly on the time of year and the region you'll be visiting. As a general rule (and all year round in the south), opt for light clothing, a poncho for rain and a light jacket if you're traveling in spring or autumn. In winter, you'll need layers, a hat and gloves in northern regions. And always comfortable shoes, as there's a lot of walking on the sites.
