Costa Rica

In the land of Pura Vida!

A green country populated by myriads of birds and animals, some of them unique in the world, but above all imbued with an astonishing philosophy of life filled with gratitude for life: Pura Vida.

Costa Rica, or the rich coast, a land that the Spaniards believed to be full of gold and other coveted materials. But the real wealth of Costa Rica is its biodiversity, now widely promoted by the tourism industry. For this country has long been a pioneer in the preservation of its heritage: today, over 25% of the national territory is protected! Its tropical forests, volcanoes, waterfalls and beaches are all invitations to gentle exploration.

Ideal for

Safari, outdoor sports, water sports, trekking, honeymoon, cultural, language courses, beach breaks, cruises.

Did you know?

That this small country is home to 6% of the world's biodiversity, and that 160 new species are still being discovered every year.

The must-haves

  1. Discover the forest the local way, i.e. by exploring the canopy, walking right up to the treetops (by zip-line or funicular), where most of the interesting animals hide.
  2. Penetrate the mists of the Monteverde Cloud Forest.
  3. Watch turtles lay their eggs in Tortuguero National Park.
  4. Push on to Corcovado National Park, difficult to access but so extraordinary.
  5. Dive the translucent waters of Isla del Cano in search of rays, turtles and whales.
  6. Explore the country's many volcanoes, including Arenal, Poás and Irazú.

Between us

  1. Bordered by the Pacific on one side and the Caribbean Sea on the other, Costa Rica is brimming with magnificent beaches. From surfing spots to tranquil or wild beaches, there's something for everyone.
  2. When it comes to accommodation, there's something for everyone, from small, charming B&Bs to large hotel chains, lodges and youth hostels.
  3. In restaurants, the bill generally includes the tip.
  4. If you're visiting Native American communities, dress conservatively and always ask permission to take photos.

When to go?

The best period is from December to April. May to November is the rainy season, when it's warmer and of course very humid.

Packing

Light clothing, a hat and good sun protection if you plan to stay in coastal areas. On the other hand, you'll need warmer clothes and, above all, covering clothing to discover the country's interior and jungle zones. If you're climbing volcanoes, you'll need very warm clothes, gloves and a hat. Always carry a poncho in your bag to cover up in case of tropical rain.
