Croatia

Feet in the water, head in the sun

If you love preserved historic towns, clear seas and Mediterranean sunshine, this is the destination for you.

A pivotal country between Central Europe and the Mediterranean, Croatia combines the assets of both regions. An extraordinary historical and architectural heritage and a coastline bathed in sunshine and clear waters, miraculously preserved from concreting. Stretching almost 2000 kilometers from north to south, Croatia's terrain is particularly mountainous and rugged, even as you approach the coast. Its natural parks, among the finest on the continent, preserve the rarest species of European fauna. And as if so much beauty weren't enough, Croatia extends the spectacle with a firework display of charming little islands - more than a thousand of them - scattered along its coastline.

Ideal for

Seaside holidays, honeymoons, water sports, diving, hiking, mountaineering, shopping, cultural events, golf.

Did you know?

That one of Croatia's many islands, Galesnjak, is shaped like a heart. Nicknamed «Love Island», it is uninhabited and welcomes Robinsons in search of virgin beaches.

The must-haves

  1. Visit Dubrovnik, powerfully fortified and suspended on a balcony above the sea.
  2. Stroll through the Plitvice Lakes National Park: amid lush natural surroundings, 16 large, blue-green lakes tumble into each other in a concert of waterfalls.
  3. Step back in time in Split, in Diocletian's miraculously preserved palace.
  4. Discover Zagreb, its museums and its upper town.
  5. Cruise from island to island in the Kornati archipelago, almost all uninhabited.

Between us

  1. Croatia is divided in two by Bosnia, which you have to cross for 10 km to reach Split and Dubrovnik.
  2. Croatian food is very good, with specialties reminiscent of both Italian and Central European cuisine.
  3. The coastline is magnificent, but there are few sandy beaches, mainly on the islands of Rab, Krk and Brac.
  4. Croatia has some superb rafting spots.
  5. In restaurants and cafés, it's customary to round up the money, a kind of small tip that's almost obligatory.

When to go?

From spring to autumn, if possible avoiding the busy month of August.

Packing

Even in summer, you'll need a varied suitcase, as the wind can pick up suddenly, especially on the coast. In winter, warm clothing, a raincoat, a parka and good lined shoes if you're visiting the mountainous interior.
