Cuba

The offbeat island

Cuba is a huge myth, an island of atmospheres, a land of music and smiles, but also of resourcefulness. To be savored slowly, like a long Havana.

In Cuba, the clock suddenly stopped ticking one day in 1959... Remnants of this sumptuous era are thousands of palaces and, above all, old Americans lovingly pampered by their owners. Cuba is full of charming colonial towns, such as Trinidad, which remains virtually as it was in the days of the conquistadores, with its cobbled streets, bell towers, palaces and vast mansions. It's also a lush natural setting, with dream beaches just waiting to be explored by bathers. But above all, it's an island of atmospheres. Here, the nights are even more beautiful than the days, magnified by the notes that burst forth from everywhere without warning. For Cubans, music and dance are at least as important as the air we breathe.

Ideal for

Seaside holidays for couples or families, dance classes, language courses, scuba diving, cultural visits.

Did you know?

That Cubans are indefatigable students, often multilingual, and that you'll often be addressed in French.

The must-haves

  1. Try out the surprising local means of transport: coco-taxis, rickshaws and, of course, oldtimers.
  2. Sip a cocktail made to the highest standards.
  3. Show off your salsa skills in one of the many bars in Havana's historic center.
  4. Attend a baseball game, the national sport.
  5. Take a dream beach break at Cayo Coco, Cayo Santa Maria or Cayo Largo.

Between us

  1. Think about it when you're packing your suitcase: what may seem trivial to us is a treasure to the Cubans. Soap, medicine, school supplies, T-shirts... Cubans lack everything except music and kindness.
  2. An alternative way to get to know the local population is to stay in «casas particulares», i.e. with local people.
  3. If you buy rum at a duty-free shop in Cuba, it will be confiscated (like any other liquid) if you make a stopover before returning to Europe.
  4. The comprehensive www.jeparsacuba.com blog, the brainchild of two Franco-Cubans, is a mine of information and advice for a successful trip to Cuba.

When to go?
