Dominican Republic

To change Caribbean

Christopher Columbus was the first to rave: «This land is the most beautiful that man has ever trodden!»

If you're dreaming of an exotic, fascinating and diverse vacation destination, have you ever considered the Dominican Republic? All the more so as, behind its coconut-fringed beaches bathed in crystal-clear waters, its interior conceals villages and an ultra-hospitable population, as well as an incredible diversity of ecosystems and landscapes. A superb playground, full of the unusual. Add to this a particularly rich culture and nature, as well as the vibrant nightlife of Santo Domingo, the capital.

Ideal for

Seaside breaks, water sports, trekking, honeymoons, golf, active vacations, wildlife watching.

Did you know?

Ocoa Bay is home to the only vineyard in the Caribbean.

The must-haves

  1. Visit Santo Domingo. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the old town is teeming with relics from the Spanish colonial era, as well as excellent restaurants serving traditional dishes.
  2. Watch humpback whales in Samana Bay (January to March) and manatees in the mangroves of the northwest.
  3. Relax on some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, such as Playa Rincon.
  4. Canyoning, tubing or rafting down a river, the only place to do it in the West Indies.
  5. Hike to Pico Duarte (3087 m), the highest peak in the West Indies, and marvel at its coniferous forests, bubbling streams and natural pools.

Between us

  1. Don't listen to some rumours: the interior of the country is beautiful and not at all dangerous.
  2. Do you want to meet some Dominicans or simply take a break from the music? In the small towns of the Dominican Republic, it's at... car wash! To the sound of merengue or the latest American hits.
  3. More than a sport, baseball here is a religion. All the youngsters play it and dream of becoming champions.
  4. While Samana and Punta Cana are very busy, it's possible to find yourself alone on the beach by heading for the south-western beaches, for example.

When to go?

The best season, the «coolest» but also the least humid, is from December to May. Between May and October, it's just a little warmer and showers are more frequent.

Packing

Lightweight clothing for all seasons, but remember to take something to cover up at altitude and on cooler evenings, as well as good walking shoes.
