Ecuador

The perfect compromise

A veritable summary of Latin America, Ecuador is one of the continent's most complete countries.

Ecuador is the ideal candidate for a first trip to South America. An authentic welcome, a diversity of visits and, if you can judge, an incredible range of landscapes and cultures: a tropical coastline, green valleys giving access to high plateaus, volcanoes, a section of the Andes mountain range bristling with snow-capped peaks and a beautiful stretch of Amazonian jungle. Not to mention one of mankind's most fabulous treasures: the Galapagos Islands. The same can be said of the Ecuadorian people, a veritable kaleidoscope of ethnicities, including European settlers, former African slaves, an Asian minority and a large Amerindian population. Their hospitality and delicious culinary traditions will win you over.

Ideal for

Cultural, safari, trekking, outdoor sports, cooking classes, language courses, photography, beach breaks.

Did you know?

In 2008, Ecuador became one of the first countries to officially recognize the rights of nature, and to stop treating it as property.

The must-haves

  1. Visit Quito's old town and dine in a restaurant straight out of the colonial era.
  2. Stroll along Gayaquil's newly rehabilitated Malecón, which stretches along the banks of the two rivers that flow through the city.
  3. Cruise from island to island in the Galapagos archipelago, a truly unspoiled wonder of our planet, rubbing shoulders with iguanas, giant tortoises and birds, then diving with sea lions and stingrays.
  4. Lounging in the natural pools of Papallacta.
  5. Take an excursion to the Cotopaxi volcano, shaped like a near-perfect cone.

Between us

  1. Ecuadorian handicrafts are simply magnificent, and of a mind-boggling variety. But don't you dare call their famous white hats ‘panama’. For it's right here in Montecristi, not far from the Pacific coast, that they've been woven for generations.
  2. In the Galapagos, you'll feel like you're the first person to set foot on these volcanic islands with their unique fauna. A fascinating laboratory of life and its adaptation to harsh conditions.
  3. June and September are the best times to see humpback whales.
  4. Ecuador is an excellent destination for surfers.

When to go?

As Ecuador's climate is equatorial, there isn't really a bad (or perfect) season to visit. However, the best time to visit is from June to October, during the dry season. In the Andes, however, temperatures remain fairly cool throughout the year.

Packing

Ecuador combines a variety of climates. High altitude, tropical coastline, jungle and dry climate in the Galapagos. You'll need to pack light clothes, but also layers of clothing. Sunscreen and mosquito repellent, as well as good binoculars for wildlife observation in the Galapagos.
