Egypt

Eternal soul of the Orient

Such a change of scenery so close to home is exceptional. Because a trip to Egypt means changing worlds, slipping into the corridors of time. Back in the days of the pharaohs, who loved gigantism. As witnessed by the pyramids, the columns of the hypostyle hall at Karnak temple and the monoliths of Abu Simbel.

A trip to Egypt takes us back thousands of years, to the dawn of the first civilizations. Here are some of the world's most beautiful archaeological sites. Wonders that fascinated the first tourists from Greece and the Roman Empire in antiquity. And they continue to amaze today's travellers. And we can't get enough of the gentle green landscapes of the Nile Valley, the ballet of dahabiyas and feluccas, the luminosity and blaze of the setting sun, the turbulence of the cities and souks, the scent of incense and spices.

Egypt

Ideal for

Cultural, seaside, diving, city-trip, trekking, water sports, cruises, shopping.

Did you know?

That the Statue of Liberty in New York was originally planned to be erected at the entrance to the Suez Canal in Egypt.

The must-haves

1. Discover Cairo, the Giza plateau and archaeological museums, including the brand-new Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM).

2. Sail back in time on the tranquil waters of the Nile.

2. Enter the tombs of the great pharaohs in the Valley of the Kings.

3. Visit the ancient sites of Karnak and Luxor in what was once the majestic city of Thebes.

4. Sink into the desert sands to the site of Abu Simbel.

5. Visit the White Desert, famous for its immaculate limestone concretions, some of which are quite bizarre in shape.

6. Venture to the oases of Fayoum, Dakhla and Siwa (taking into account your government's safety instructions).

7. For a seaside vacation, nothing beats the Red Sea resorts, renowned for their diving sites.

Between us

  1. Egypt is currently a safe destination, but be sure to check with your travel agency and government websites to see if there are any areas of the country that you should not visit.
  2. In stations, subways and cinemas, you'll often see two lines: one for men, the other for women. Don't stand up against this practice.
  3. Except on the beach or in seaside hotels, avoid bare shoulders, short shorts and skirts and, of course, bare chests. But also traditional local dress, which Egyptians find ridiculous.
  4. Always ask permission before taking a photo of someone. At tourist sites, there's a good chance you'll be asked for a fee. Above all, avoid taking photos near military sites. Drones are strictly forbidden in Egypt.
  5. Avoid public displays of affection. Egyptian lovers are very careful, because a kiss can be very costly if the police get involved.
  6. At the souk, haggling is the order of the day. The first price quoted should be divided by 2 or 3 to obtain a reasonable offer. Don't be too quick to show interest in the object you're after.

When to go?

Avoid the really hot summer, especially in the south. In fact, some companies stop operating at this time. The ideal season is from November to April.

Packing

Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing in cotton, linen or other heat-retardant materials. Don't forget to pack a few sweaters and cardigans for the evening, a scarf, hat and sunglasses, high-intensity sun cream and high shoes for desert excursions. Avoid excessively revealing clothing.
