Estonia

The singing country

Lost on the edge of the Baltic, Estonia boasts superb wilderness and a rich cultural and historical heritage.

The smallest of the Baltic States is also one of the least densely populated in Europe. That's because Estonia has managed to preserve a large part of its wilderness. It is home to the continent's largest concentration of brown bears. With its hills, beaches, dense forests and many lakes, as well as almost 2,000 islands, it feels like Scandinavia is just around the corner. Tallinn, its magnificent capital, is without doubt one of the prettiest small towns on the continent. Nestling behind its ramparts, it is disarmingly uniform, arriving almost intact in a straight line from the Middle Ages. This natural, historic aspect is in stark contrast to the inhabitants' taste for design and the technological and digital progress of this country nicknamed E-Estonia, where Skype, Wise, Bolt and electronic voting, among others, were born.

Ideal for

Cultural, shopping, outdoor sports, trekking, safari, photography, cruises.

Did you know?

That the 600 inhabitants of the small island of Kihnu still live according to a matriarchal structure. As the men are fishermen, the women alone manage and direct life on land.

The must-haves

  1. Stay and explore Tallinn's winding streets lined with colorful houses and Baroque palaces, and its squares dominated by church steeples.
  2. Stay on the island of Saaremaa. A land out of time, a little archaic, where life often seems to be as it was in the past, in villages with stone fences and thatched roofs.
  3. Visit Hermann's fortress in Narva, on the Russian border.
  4. Hiking in Lahemaa or Soomaa national parks.
  5. Take a traditional smoke sauna in the Voru region, then plunge into the icy water. Don't forget to whip yourself with branches.

Between us

  1. Forests cover half of the territory and invite you to take a stroll: there are many well-marked hiking trails.
  2. Estonian cuisine is influenced by Finland, Russia and Germany. Here, we eat a lot of soups, marinated or smoked fish. And let's not forget rye and buckwheat bread, flavored with caraway, cardamom or sesame.
  3. Choirs, folk groups... the Estonian people are a singing people. Songs and dances are recognized as intangible heritage by Unesco.
  4. One of Estonia's finest beers, A. Le Cocq, is named after a Belgian merchant whose company acquired the A. Le Cocqe century Estonia's first brewery.

When to go?

From late spring to September. The days are long, the light warm and the weather generally fine, with temperatures averaging 20°C and peaking at 30°C. However, some will enjoy discovering Estonia in the snow.

Packing

Wear light clothing, but bring enough to cover up in case of bad weather. Don't forget mosquito repellent. Winters are harsh: parka and warm clothes are a must at this time of year.
