Ethiopia

Mystical Africa

One of the world's oldest nations is also a veritable mosaic of peoples, languages, religions and cultures.

Ethiopia is a raw, authentic and striking destination. But it remains little-known. Where many would expect to find themselves in a desert, we discover a diverse and varied country. It sinks below sea level in the torrid, salty depressions of the Danakil, but climbs high above 4,000 meters, swinging from valley to verdant plateau where the Blue Nile rises. In addition to nature, Ethiopia fascinates visitors with its cultural sites - the buried churches, the imperial city of Gondar or the fortified city of Harar, where Arthur Rimbaud lived - and the rites and customs of its peoples.

Ideal for

Cultural, safari, photo, trekking.

Did you know?

Ethiopia is the only African country with its own alphabet and calendar.

The must-haves

  1. Wander through the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, Ethiopia's new Jerusalem.
  2. Surveying the Danakil desert, located below sea level.
  3. Sip a traditional coffee in a «coffee house».
  4. Visit Aksum, said to have been the capital of the legendary Queen of Sheba. It is also said to be home to the Ark of the Covenant, hidden in the cathedral.
  5. Go trekking and enjoy breathtaking views in Simien National Park, a World Heritage Site for its breathtaking high plateaus.
  6. Sail to the reclusive monasteries on the islands of Lake Tana.

Between us

  1. It is not advisable to drive yourself in Ethiopia. Some roads are in good condition, but there are mostly dirt tracks.
  2. Shoes must be removed when entering a church. Remember to bring socks, as the floor can be hot.
  3. Churches are always active places of worship. No decorative lighting here. Always carry a flashlight to admire the frescoes and the beauty of the sites.
  4. Ethiopian honey is renowned and delicious. Above all, it's a totally artisanal production with a strong floral flavor. Sold in bulk, you'll need to bring your own containers.
  5. Ethiopians are not renowned for their sense of service. On the other hand, baksheesh and tipping are the order of the day, even in restaurants.

When to go?

October to March to avoid the rainy season. Particularly avoid July and August, two months with heavy rainfall.

Packing

Light, covering clothing. To protect you from the sun, but also to be able to visit places of worship. A few warmer items for evenings in the desert or highlands. High-index sun cream and a hat. And last but not least, disinfectant gel, because here, you eat with your hands.
