Faroe Islands

The invigorating archipelago

Located halfway between Scotland and Iceland, the Faroe Islands are undoubtedly among Europe's least-known islands.

They boast fabulous, tortured landscapes, with sheer cliffs overlooking the Atlantic storms. A destination of choice for those who appreciate a grandiose natural setting close to home. The archipelago comprises a total of 18 islands, each with its own character. Swept by all the winds of the ocean, they are lush and green, and are home to 70,000 sheep. More numerous than the 50,000 registered inhabitants. You can't get enough of the colorful houses with grass-covered roofs, the wooden churches and the thousands of fluttering birds. Many travellers are content to make a short stopover here, but beware: there's a great risk of regretting not having planned a longer stay.

Ideal for

Ecotourism, trekking, wildlife watching, fishing, photography, water sports, scuba diving.

Did you know?

The Faroe Islands are part of Denmark, but not of the European Union.

The must-haves

  1. Visit the historic heart of Thorshavn, the capital.
  2. Explore the cliffs of Vestmanna and its seabird colonies.
  3. Take the boat to the island of Mykines, covered with puffins or sea parrots.
  4. Marvel at the Gasadalur waterfall plunging straight into the sea.
  5. See the old village of Saksun, built in the 17th century.

Between us

  1. The Faroes are home to huge colonies of seabirds.
  2. Here, the weather sometimes changes from one minute to the next, but you just have to be patient to wait for the good weather to return.
  3. Renting a car is the most practical way to visit the archipelago: most of the islands are linked by huge underwater tunnels.
  4. A boat trip will show you the islands from another, equally magnificent angle.

When to go?

June to September to enjoy the long days of the Nordic summer. July and August are the least rainy months. Thanks to the ocean, it almost never freezes during the day in winter, but the peaks are covered with a lovely dusting of snow.

Packing

Take warm clothing whatever the season, as temperatures don't vary much but rarely exceed 13°C. Always have a raincoat, a hat and good waterproof shoes.
