Finland

A breath of fresh air and nature

The main reason to travel to Finland is to experience a unique environment and way of life.

Forests, lakes, forests and more lakes. The country often referred to as the «Land of a Thousand Lakes» actually boasts over 188,000 lakes! A country so natural could not fail to have inspired an art of living deeply focused on well-being. Starting with the sauna, of course, which in Finland ends with a jump into the icy water, even in the middle of winter. And let's not forget that over half the country is in Lapland, a land of adventure where winters are extreme. And it's here that Santa Claus makes his home.

Ideal for

Wellness, cultural, trekking, fishing, winter sports, outdoor sports, cooking classes, city trips.

Did you know?

That Finland has more heavy metal bands per capita than anywhere else in the world. A musical style that is ultra-popular here, even if it stands in stark contrast to the usual Finnish quietude.

The must-haves

  1. Soak up Finnish design by visiting the capital's emblematic sites and monuments.
  2. Stay in a cottage in the Great Lakes region and explore the surrounding area by canoe.
  3. Stroll through the streets of the medieval town of Porvoo, built of colorful wood.
  4. Stay in Lapland in winter like a Finn: enjoy the joys of skiing, watch the northern lights and experiment with woodsman techniques.
  5. Sleep in a glass igloo to watch the northern lights.
  6. Sail aboard the Sampo, the world's only tourist icebreaker, and dive into the frozen sea in a wetsuit.
  7. Discover the Sami culture in the Kilpisjärvi region.

Between us

  1. In Finland, we don't talk to say nothing. Between friends or colleagues, it's normal to leave several minutes of silence in a conversation. Silence is not awkward, but rather a moment of pause and respect.
  2. Finnish is a very complicated language, not related to most other European languages. Fortunately, English is spoken and understood by the majority of the population.
  3. The sauna is an essential element of the Finnish art of living. They can be found in almost every home and accommodation. Don't turn down an invitation to the sauna - it's an essential place for socializing.
  4. Finland, too, has its own Big Five. It includes the bear, of course, but also the lynx, the elk, the wolverine and the wolf.
  5. Consider renting a cottage (‘mökki’) for your stay. They're everywhere, and one of the best ways to immerse yourself in Finnish nature.

When to go?

Summer or winter. If you're afraid of the cold, choose the period from May to September. Lapland in winter is a pure gem, especially as the days lengthen towards February and March.

Packing

In Finland, the seasons are very different. In summer, bring practical clothing such as T-shirts, hiking pants, fleeces and hiking boots. As well as a rain jacket and mosquito repellent. In winter, you'll need warm layers of breathable yet waterproof clothing, starting with long johns, tights, underpants, undergloves and good socks. Complete with warm ski clothing. And, whatever the season, a swimsuit to enjoy the sauna.
