France

The infinite destination

A country of incredible diversity, France offers an infinite number of travel possibilities. If the country is the world's number one destination, with almost 90 million visitors a year, it's also because each region, each département, is in itself worth a trip.

So much diversity that, on second thought, it would take more than a lifetime to discover and experience it all. City-trip, short break, long-haul trip, themed tour, river or sea cruise, it's all possible. Are you more of a seaside person? France boasts one of the most extensive and varied coastlines in Europe, from the cliffs and immense sandy beaches of Normandy to the white sandy creeks of the Mediterranean and the dunes criss-crossed by the rollers of the Atlantic. Looking for a bucolic getaway? France's landscapes, too, are incredibly varied, with nature parks and major sites to explore... And if you're a gourmet, there are countless themed routes and renowned gastronomic stop-offs throughout the country's countless terroirs!

Ideal for

Cultural, seaside holidays, city trips, gastronomy, golf, diving, cookery courses, trekking, water sports, mountaineering, winter sports, wine tourism.

Did you know?

Twenty years after its construction for the 1889 Universal Exhibition, the Eiffel Tower was due to be demolished, but today it is the most photographed monument in the world.

The must-haves

  1. Immerse yourself in the Renaissance at the magnificent châteaux of the Loire Valley.
  2. Take a city-trip to Paris, preferably in August, when the city is quieter.
  3. Explore the countryside on your ancestor's bike or on foot, stopping off to explore the small villages.
  4. Try the gastronomy of one of the great starred establishments that have made French cuisine famous.
  5. Visit one of France's famous vineyards and choose your own vintages directly from the producer's cellar.

Between us

  1. Mainly in the provinces and villages, shops close at lunchtime and sometimes don't reopen until 3pm.
  2. When you sit down at a restaurant, it's customary to receive a free carafe of water.
  3. The classification of hotels in France differs from that in other countries, so be sure to check before you book.
  4. In some vineyards or parts of vineyards, cellar tours are subject to a charge, in others not.

When to go?

All year round: summer on the coast, in the mountains, on the islands, on city trips or in the countryside. In winter, for the pleasures of skiing and snowboarding, or for a themed short break.

Packing

Target your selections according to season and altitude: light clothing in summer, but also a woollen jacket and rain jacket. Warmer clothing from October in the north and November in the south.
