Germany

Close to home

Germany, a country not far away that we don't immediately think of when we travel. And yet, its art of living, imbued with creativity, lightness and ecology, never ceases to inspire us. How can we fail to be seduced by its medieval cities, its doll's villages and its towns where history and the most cutting-edge design collide? And finally, let's not forget that Germany is as much about endless forests, beaches and marine islands as it is about ultra-modern cities, as well as one of the most beautiful parts of the Alps.

Ideal for

Shopping, water sports, outdoor sports, winter sports, trekking, spa, golf, culture.

Did you know?

That Neuschwanstein (the mad work of Ludwig II of Bavaria) inspired Walt Disney to build Sleeping Beauty's castle.

The must-haves

  1. Explore the romantic Rhine Valley in summer by boat and/or bike, or marvel at the Christmas markets during the festive season.
  2. Discover Berlin, its alternative and nightlife, its castles and fabulous museums.
  3. Stop off in Bavaria, preferably during the Oktoberfest, to see Munich and Ludwig II's castle.
  4. Walking in the Black Forest and around Lake Constance.
  5. Take a city-trip to Dresden.

Between us

  1. Children under 15 travel free by train if accompanied by a parent.
  2. Don't hesitate to take a seat in the Biergärten, small green spaces where you can drink a beer and eat snacks. Musical entertainment is provided on certain occasions.
  3. Germans have no problem with nudism, and you'll easily find it on many beaches (those marked «FKK Strand» are even reserved for nudists) and bathing areas.
  4. For nature-lovers and hikers, over a third of Germany is covered in forests.

When to go?

From April to October, but also in winter if you want to enjoy the joys of skiing in the Bavarian Alps.

Packing

Light clothing in summer, always including a rain jacket and sweater for cool days and evenings. Cover up well in winter, especially in the Alpine regions, but also towards the Baltic coast.
