Mauritius is an island of blends. Of colors. Clear-cut colors like the turquoise of the lagoons, the intense green of the sugarcane fields, the red of the blossoming flamboyant trees, the saffron of the saris and the variegated tones of the Hindu and Tamil temples.
But Mauritius is also a mix of customs. Left-hand drive, purely British police uniforms and English road signs are reminders that the island is part of the Commonwealth. Print media, store signs and poetic place names such as Flic en Flac, Bois Chéri, Mont Cocotte, Bassin Loulou and Pamplemousses all evoke the days when Mauritius was «Isle de France». Nearly everyone will be able to answer you in French, with a slight Québécois accent. As for the saris and temples dedicated to colorful gods, they are a reminder that the majority of the population originates from India. Above all, this is Mauritius: an incredible tropical patchwork!
