India

An explosion of the senses

India stirs, surprises, disturbs, amazes, but never leaves us indifferent.

A trip to India is a constant encounter with all extremes: the elegance of women in saris, the hustle and bustle of the cities, the shimmering colors and intoxicating spices, the fervor of the temples, the wealth of the palaces and the harshness of life in the slums. As you move away from the sprawling cities, you'll meet a smiling, welcoming population scattered across thousands of villages. You'll also be fascinated by the lush landscapes alternating between rice paddies and coconut groves and, above all, by the thousands of temples, stunning testimonies left by dynasties and maharajas. But be warned: seeing the whole of India, a country inhabited by almost one and a half billion people and 33 million gods, may take several lifetimes.

Ideal for

Cultural, cruises, cooking classes, yoga, outdoor sports, mountaineering.

Did you know?

That nearly 40% of the Indian population is vegetarian.

The must-haves

  1. Marvel at the majesty of the Taj Mahal. This white marble mausoleum, built by an emperor as a tribute to one of his wives, is one of the 7 wonders of the modern world.
  2. In Kerala, explore the ‘Backwaters’, a fantastic network of canals, lakes and rice paddies, by light boat made of wood and woven reeds.
  3. Visit the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the holiest of religious shrines for the Sikhs.
  4. Survey the national parks in the footsteps of tigers and the great Indian fauna.
  5. In Tamil Nadu, tour the temples and marvel at the rituals and fervor of the faithful.
  6. Push on to the remote valleys of Zanskar, Ladakh and Sikkim in the Himalayas.
  7. Taste the subtleties of Bengali cuisine.
India

Between us

  1. 21 official languages, over 600 dialects and 25 scripts... We appreciate that English has become the commercial language, even if the Indian accent sometimes leads to misunderstandings.
  2. We don't greet by shaking hands, but by making the namaste, palms together.
  3. To photograph and film certain temples and monuments, a fee must be paid.
  4. Avoid ice cubes, ice cream, raw or undercooked food, and always drink bottled water.
  5. Indians are often curious about foreigners. On the street, you'll often be stared at, touched and even photographed. Don't be afraid, it's actually quite an honor.

When to go?

From October to March, to avoid the monsoon and the heaviest temperatures. There are variations according to region and altitude.

Packing

Lightweight clothing. But above all, pack as little as possible, as there is so much to buy at low prices in India. Bring sober clothes and something to cover up in the temples (scarf, shawl). Light, high-top shoes, but also sandals for easy removal of shoes and sun protection. Don't forget to bring a small battery, an adapter and a flashlight, as well as a good first-aid kit.
