Indonesia

The giant archipelago

A mosaic of ethnic groups, cultures and biotopes, Indonesia is an extraordinary country, where each island invites you to discover something different.

With over 17,000 islands scattered over 5,120 km of ocean, Indonesia is the largest archipelago on the planet. Its hospitality is legendary, and many of its cultures and traditions are unique. Add to this a delicious gastronomy and very different lifestyles, and you've got plenty of reasons to make the trip. And let's not forget its exceptional wildlife: with its active volcanoes, snow-capped peaks right on the equator and rich seabed, Indonesia is a guaranteed change of scenery.

Ideal for

Cultural, scuba diving, beach breaks, honeymoons, water sports, trekking, safaris, photography, shopping.

Did you know?

On Balinese New Year's Day (Nyepi), the island freezes to ward off demons. No one is allowed out, and even the airport comes to a standstill!

The must-haves

  1. Visit the legendary Borobudur temple, the world's largest Buddhist monument, built in the form of a gigantic nine-storey stupa.
  2. Admire an unforgettable panorama and witness a breathtaking sunrise from Mount Bromo.
  3. Survey the island of Komodo in search of the famous varan, the largest lizard on the planet.
  4. Stay on the island of Bali and enjoy its gentle way of life.
  5. For even more tranquility, head for the Gili Islands off Lombok.

Between us

  1. Discover some of the world's richest coral reefs: in the Raja Ampat islands, manta rays in the morning and pygmy seahorses in the afternoon.
  2. Get off the beaten track and discover the Mentawai Islands, whose riverine rainforests invite you on a unique jungle journey.
  3. In Indonesia, you can eat for next to nothing in the countless warungs.
  4. Try to leave just before or after high season. In Bali, for example, the beginning of June is a good time to find tighter prices.

When to go?

May to September, during the dry season. In Irian Jaya, Borneo and Sumatra, the climate remains humid all year round.

Packing

Light clothing, but also more covering pieces if you want to visit religious sites. In Bali, you can rent a sarong at temple entrances. You'll also need warmer clothing to protect you from rain and mosquitoes during the high altitude stages.
