Japan

A change of scenery guaranteed

Between age-old traditions and futuristic innovations, Shinto rituals and pop culture, Japan is a thrilling place to be.

A trip to Japan is an interplanetary journey. Everything here seems strange and different. Paradoxically, while Japan is one of the most densely populated countries on the planet, it's also one of the safest. It's also an ideal destination for manga fans, contemporary art lovers and garden enthusiasts.

Ideal for

Cultural, cooking classes, winter sports, outdoor sports, shopping, cruises, language courses.

Did you know?

That vending machines in Japan sell almost everything, from meals and umbrellas to diapers, SIM cards and toys.

The must-haves

  1. Spend at least a few days in Tokyo, a fantastic urban chaos that stretches out in all directions, towards the horizon, towards the sky and under the earth.
  2. Stay in a ryokan and sleep Japanese-style, at ground level.
  3. Relax in an onsen (hot spring) or sento (public bath).
  4. Attend a tea ceremony in Tokyo's grand hotels or in the Happoen garden.
  5. Visit Kyoto when the cherry blossoms are in bloom and join in the traditional festivities.
  6. Browse the Fushimi Inari shrine and stroll beneath thousands of red ‘tori’.
  7. Discover the beauty of Japan's natural environment, as the country boasts a number of beautiful natural parks, including Nikko.

Between us

  1. In Japan, tribes abound and Japanese teenagers adopt the craziest looks. Here's what you'll see on Sundays, at concert exits or just about anywhere in Tokyo: cosplay (dolls from manga), wamono (a mix between the West and Japan), kawaii (candy-pink lolita), goth, gals (bleached hair and caramelized skin) or cyber (futuristic plastic clothes)... And what's more, they love posing for photos!
  2. Futuristic Tokyo is replaced by ancestral Japan in Shibamata, with its narrow streets and wooden houses.
  3. A change of scenery can also be found at the Japanese table. And it's a good thing too: Tokyo and every city in the country are full of open-air restaurants!
  4. The Japanese also love sport: watching a sumo match (info-sumo.net) is a must. Or why not baseball, where the most important games are played in the huge Tokyo Dome.

When to go?

Spring and autumn are great seasons to see Japan, when nature's colors explode. Summers, on the other hand, are often stiflingly hot and humid (with the risk of typhoons). Winter can also be pleasant and bright.

Packing

As in Japan, the weather can change dramatically, so it's a good idea to pack both light clothing and rain gear. And don't forget shoes that can be easily removed, as in Japan you have to take off your shoes to go anywhere. In winter, especially on the island of Hokkaido, temperatures can plunge, so remember to bring warm, waterproof clothing.
