Kazakhstan

Journey to the heart of the steppe

One of the world's largest states is opening up to tourism. A very natural territory, sparsely populated and culturally fascinating, Kazakhstan has no shortage of assets and is establishing itself as a new promised land to discover.

The name Kazakhstan means «land of nomads». Virtually unknown to travelers, this vast country conjures up images of an endless steppe traversed by nomads on horseback. Which it partly is. To the west, we enter the salty lands of the Aral and Caspian seas. To the south-east, the landscape fills in and greens up to the peaks that form the border with Kyrgyzstan. The ninth largest state on the planet is sparsely populated. It will appeal to travellers in search of infinite space and nature off the beaten track. Kazakhstan is also a veritable cultural and ethnic mosaic: 125 peoples make up the country.

  2. Stop off in the ancient city of Turkestan, on the Silk Road, and discover the mausoleum of the Sufi mystic Yasavi, with its bluish bulbs.
  3. Visit Charyn National Park, renowned for its astonishing rock formations, some of which have barely been discovered.
  4. Stop off in Nursultan, today's capital, to discover its ultra-modern buildings designed by leading architects.
  5. Stay in Almaty. Dethroned by Nursultan, the former capital is still the country's most important city.

Between us

  1. Kazakhs are very hospitable and curious towards travelers. You'll generally be made very welcome, and the country is very safe.
  2. Kazakhstan is an equestrian country. Horses are part of their culture... and their food too.
  3. Less than one percent of the population is of South Korean origin, and South Korean specialties are a regular feature in restaurants.
  4. Few locals speak English or any language other than Russian.
  5. Although Islam is in the majority, the country is secular and there are no religious constraints: no Ramadan, no call to prayer and no ban on alcohol.

When to go?

The Kazakh climate is continental, with very marked seasons. The best time to visit is from April to June or September to November, when temperatures are mild.

Packing

Kazakhstan's climate is continental. Summers are hot and winters freezing. Always pack plenty of layers of clothing and technical equipment for nature outings or trekking. Don't forget to bring a shawl or scarf for visiting mosques.
