Kenya

The land of the lion

A trip to Kenya means entering a vast natural landscape in perpetual motion.

Lions, elephants, gazelles, giraffes and rhinoceroses... lakes and the Great Rift Fault, endless savannahs with the mythical silhouette of Kilimanjaro as a backdrop. Kenya captures the imagination and conjures up fantastic legends and adventures. It is in this country that safari (which is a Swahili word meaning «journey») has opened up to a wider public.

Kenya

Ideal for

Safari, cultural, outdoor sports, trekking, beach holiday, honeymoon, water sports, photo.

Did you know?

Kenya is home to 11% of the world's bird species.

The must-haves

  1. Explore the vast Tsavo East Reserve. Inaugurated in 1948, it's one of the country's largest national parks, home to large populations of lions and buffalo, but above all it's the park of giants: baobabs and elephants.
  2. Venture onto the vast plains of the Masai Mara. An extension of Tanzania's Serengeti, this park is home to elephants, cheetahs and, above all, wildebeest, which migrate here by the thousands in season.
  3. Climb the slopes of Mount Kenya, Africa's second highest peak, admire its strange flora and enjoy breathtaking views.
  4. Marvel at the incredible sight of hundreds of thousands of pink flamingos on Lake Nakuru.
  5. For a change of scenery, head up to Lake Turkana, Africa's largest salt lake.
  6. Enjoy the magnificent beaches of the Indian Ocean coastline. Take Nyali, for example, for its white sand and lagoon.

Between us

  1. Whenever possible, try to sleep in the parks so that you can get straight down to business in the morning.
  2. We come across a lot of street vendors, especially on the beaches. A simple refusal is usually enough to keep them away. To buy, you'll have to haggle.
  3. In Nairobi, try home-stay accommodation, a great opportunity to meet the locals and get some good sightseeing tips.
  4. Kenya's two official languages are English and Swahili.
  5. Don't hesitate to opt for the shoulder seasons, when prices can be halved.
  6. Most of the time, you can pay for a photo portrait. And above all, always ask permission.

When to go?

December to March (dry season) for safaris and inland travel. On the other hand, July to November is the best period for a seaside holiday on the coast.

Packing

If you're going on safari, the first thing to think about is soft luggage, or luggage that's not too large to fit easily into the jeep. Lightweight clothing, of course, but also covering (against insects) and not too brightly colored (if you don't want to scare off the wildlife). Sun protection, binoculars and a water bottle. Good, flexible shoes.
