Madagascar

In the land of upside-down trees

Not quite Africa, almost Asia, Madagascar is a world apart. Plants, animals, people - don't expect monotony. Just expect to be amazed every day!

Madagascar - the Red Island - is an unclassifiable country. To understand it properly, you have to leave behind the landmarks you've acquired elsewhere in Africa. With its infinite variety of landscapes and faces, peoples and customs, this island that has taken on the shape of a continent is the promise of several journeys at once. Separated from Africa millions of years ago, it is home to some of the world's most unique species of plants and animals, including the famous lemurs and strangely shaped baobabs that seem to have grown in an unusual direction, with their roots planted in the sky. Madagascar is also the land of the ancestors, where fascinating ceremonies are still practiced, inherited from the various settlements that came here from Asia and Africa.

Ideal for

Meet the locals, observe wildlife, discover natural phenomena, scuba diving, whale watching (June to September), trekking, beach holidays for couples or families.

Did you know?

That more than half of all chameleon species live in Madagascar.

The must-haves

  1. Explore the Tsingys, veritable limestone cathedrals eroded by the rains.
  2. Cruise down the Tsiribihina River at the slow pace of a traditional boat.
  3. Admire the alley of giants (baobabs) at sunset.
  4. Enjoy the white sandy beaches of the north coast and surrounding islands.
  5. Meet the lemurs in the island's various nature reserves.

Between us

  1. Malagasy craftsmanship is rich and superb. Precious woodwork, silver jewelry, precious and semi-precious stones, cotton, raffia, basketry... Not forgetting spices and vanilla (choose dark, fat vanilla and avoid waterlogged pods).
  2. Apart from a sweet, for example, don't give anything to the children (and especially no money). Donations (school supplies, soap, clothes, etc.) should be made to the head of the family, the village head or the schoolteacher. Encouraging children to beg means they stop going to school, «earn» more than their parents and break the family hierarchy.
  3. The baobab is the island's emblem: 7 of the world's 8 species of baobab grow only in Madagascar.
  4. It's the only place on earth where the dead are turned over (famadihana). After the feast, the tomb is opened, the ancestors are turned over and dressed in a new shroud.

When to go?

From early April to late October. Avoid January, February and March in particular, as they are cyclone-prone. Located below the equator, the country's seasons are reversed compared with ours.

Packing

Light clothing and sandals, but also warmer clothes for the central highlands, where the climate is cool even during the day, and protective footwear if you're going into the bush.
