Malaysia

Asia in a nutshell

In Malaysia, you're constantly torn between two worlds: one with ultra-modernity, the other with traditional peoples and humid jungles. An intoxicating mix that's attracting more and more people!

You know very little about Malaysia before you land there one day, without really knowing what to expect, with its share of fears and expectations: sun and heat? Guaranteed. A human anthill and poverty like in India? The reality is quite different! Superb, well-preserved nature, unspoilt seabeds, a profusion of animals and plants, lush vegetation even in the heart of the cities - that's the A side. A peaceful melting pot of peoples, languages, religions, customs and colors. Smiles and the kindness typical of South-East Asia: that's side B, just as unexpected.

Ideal for

Seaside holidays, water sports, scuba diving, cultural activities, trekking, shopping,

Did you know?

That Malaysia is a federation of states, including the original Singapore. But it's also a kingdom: the king is elected every 5 years from among the nine sultans of the Malay Peninsula, and everything has gone smoothly for over 50 years.

The must-haves

  1. Visit Penang, an island-state with an ambience unchanged since colonial times.
  2. Take a mini city-trip to the capital, Kuala Lumpur.
  3. Enjoy an adventure in the Borneo jungle and stay in a longhouse.
  4. Take a ticket to the paradise of the Perenthian Islands.
  5. Visit the Batu caves, a colorful Hindu sacred site.

Between us

  1. A thousand temptations await you, including batik, sarongs, kites and, above all, superb Aboriginal handicrafts (blowpipes, baskets, wooden statuettes or the kriss, the traditional Malay knife). But also tea, spices... Not forgetting clothes and all the modern objects that sell for rikiki prices all over the country.
  2. Even without a reservation, you can always find a roof at a low price, except during festive periods (Chinese New Year, Colours of Malaysia festival around National Day, etc.).
  3. Kuala Lumpur airport truly deserves its title as one of the best in the world! Superb, clean, friendly, bright. And the astonishing concept of an airport in the forest and a forest in the airport adds an extra touch of magic.

When to go?

Malaysia has an equatorial climate, so it's always hot and humid, with two monsoon periods to be avoided: the winter monsoon (November to February) is the strongest and mainly affects the east and Borneo; the summer monsoon (August to November) sweeps along the west coast, but to a lesser extent. Beware of mosquitoes!

Packing

Light but covering clothing, especially if you plan to explore the forests of Borneo. Shoes without laces, as in Malaysia, you remove your shoes before entering a house or religious site. Take some warmer clothes for the highland stages.
