Mexico

In the land of the feathered serpent

A link between the two Americas, Mexico is a colourful, contrasting and ebullient country, never stingy with contradictions, but ultimately deeply endearing.

This is a truly vast destination, with a geography more varied than a tray of salsa at a street market. So you'll have to make some choices. The country stretches over 4,000 km, from the shores of the Sea of Cortés via Acapulco Bay to the white-sand beaches of the Riviera Maya, from the arid, cactus-clad western landscapes of the north to the subtropical plains dotted with Mayan cities of the Yucatán. Its history is just as rich, shaped by prestigious and, in some cases, still mysterious civilizations that have left some of the most fascinating remains on the planet.

Mexico

Ideal for

Seaside, cultural, cooking classes, trekking, golf, honeymoon, diving, water sports, language courses.

Did you know?

That in the depths of Cancun's sea lies a veritable underwater museum: MUSA.

The must-haves

  1. Discover Chichen Itza (listed among the 7 Wonders of the Modern World), Uxmal, Tulum and Palenque, some of the most remarkable archaeological sites in Mayan country.
  2. Alternate between the cenotes of the Yucatan and the turquoise waters of the Riviera Maya.
  3. Immerse yourself in the frenzy of Mexico City and its past with a visit to the Unesco-listed site of Teotihuacan.
  4. Set sail for Mexico's coolest island: Holbox.
  5. Arrange to be in Mexico on Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), November 2.
  6. Explore Baja California in the northwest of the country, a natural gem hemmed with white-sand beaches where whale-watching is particularly popular.

Between us

  1. Mexico is rich in traditions, that's a fact. One of them is wrestling (lucha libre), in which masked athletes compete against each other. Matches take place several nights a week at Mexico City's Arena.
  2. Another component of the Mexican soul is music, which can be heard everywhere. And it takes many forms. Including the famous mariachis, whom you're sure to meet.
  3. In restaurants, leave the waiter a tip (10 to 15% of the bill), as this is often his only remuneration.
  4. Mexican gastronomy has been declared an intangible heritage of humanity by UNESCO. It is rich in endemic natural ingredients, but each region has its own specialties.

When to go?

October to May to avoid the tropical rainy season and its muggy atmosphere.

Packing

Light, breathable clothing as a general rule, especially in tropical areas. Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Take covering clothing to replace sun cream, which is forbidden in certain protected swimming areas (Quintana Roo). In the interior and at higher altitudes, bring warmer clothing.
