Namibia

Nature at its best

A late arrival among safari destinations, Namibia ranks among the most beautiful countries on the African continent.

At the very edge of Africa, Namibia offers a marvellous combination of grandiose landscapes and a wide variety of little-altered fauna. Here, wild worlds collide, confronting the great African fauna with that of the cold Antarctic waters, the ecosystems of the southern deserts with the wetland ecosystems of the Zambezi River. The country is immense and sparsely populated, a very large-scale Africa that accentuates the sensation of calm and plenitude. A wild yet easy Africa, where everything is well-maintained and everything works. All you have to do is enjoy the wonders and landscapes at 200%.

Ideal for

Safari, tour, culinary, ecotourism, expedition, driving vacation, photo trip, cultural.

Did you know?

That Namibia is home to the largest cheetah population on the planet. Some 3,000 of these graceful felines.

The must-haves

  1. Along the Atlantic coast, between desert and ocean.
  2. Visit Etosha National Park for several days.
  3. Hike the immense red dunes (especially the famous Dune 45) of Sossusvlei at dawn.
  4. Visit the Fish River Canyon, one of the largest on the planet.
  5. In the company of a guide, meet the Himbas in Kaokoland.
  6. Get lost in the ghost town of Kolmanskop, partly buried in the desert sands.

Between us

  1. Car rental is one of the most practical ways to visit the country. All you need is an international driving license.
  2. In the desert, carry a supply of water, as well as petrol for long distances. Stay on the roads and respect the speed limit (80km/h).
  3. You'll find all types of accommodation, but in the parks and out in the wilderness, you'll mainly find lodges and campsites. Most have swimming pools.
  4. A strange mix of German, Afrikaner and African cultures. Some villages seem to have been moved directly from Germany to the desert.
  5. The Atlantic coast (Lüderitz and Walvis Bay) boasts some superb windsurfing and kitesurfing spots.

When to go?

From April to November, during the austral winter. This is the period of least heat and least humidity. From October onwards, the vegetation is very dry and sparse, allowing the best wildlife sightings.

Packing

Light, comfortable, light-coloured, long-sleeved clothing. Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. High boots and socks. A few sweaters and a scarf for cool evenings. Binoculars for wildlife observation.
