Netherlands

The country below the sea

More than any other land, the Netherlands has been patiently shaped by man. Everything is ordered, thought out and organized, often with great harmony.

«God created the Earth, but left it to the Dutch to build the Netherlands», goes an old local saying. The dykes that alternate with the dunes on the seafront and line the banks of the canals form the backbone of this territory that has been hard won from the sea. In addition to its water protection systems, this small country, most of which lies below sea level, is full of wonders, starting with its historic towns and incredible art museums, some of the most remarkable on the continent. Here, you'll breathe iodized, invigorating air, and as soon as the sun shines, you'll discover a land flooded with the light that so inspired the painters of the Golden Age.

Ideal for

Seaside, water sports, hiking, cultural, shopping, golf.

Did you know?

That there are more bicycles in the Netherlands than there are inhabitants, because the Dutch generally keep a second, neater bike for special occasions.

The must-haves

  1. Discover Amsterdam, a magnificent city criss-crossed by canals, and the country's countless historic cities.
  2. Walk or cycle through the magnificent Hoge Veluwe National Park, then visit the Kröller-Müller Museum, brimming with masterpieces.
  3. Cruise the canals and waterways in a traditional flat-bottomed boat.
  4. Visit the Wadden archipelago.
  5. Marvel at the fields of daffodils and tulips and visit the famous Keukenhof gardens.

Between us

  1. Do as the Dutch do and get on a bike: the cycling network is impressive and of high quality. And don't forget that cyclists have priority over cars.
  2. The Dutch aren't renowned for their gastronomy, but don't hesitate to try the food trucks and other street stalls offering fried and smoked fish.
  3. Don't be surprised: the Dutch eat early!
  4. The Netherlands has the highest density of museums in the world: make the most of it!
  5. In Zeeland, try your hand at a ‘ringrijden’ tournament on horseback.

When to go?

From spring to autumn, the Netherlands is at its most beautiful. The weather can change very quickly, and a little patience is often all that's needed to see the fine weather return.

Packing

Lighter clothing in summer, but always bring sweaters and rain gear, as showers are always a possibility. Bring a few sporty clothes for cycling or hiking by the sea.
