New Zealand

The land of the long white cloud

Aoetaroa, «the land of the long white cloud», is the name of this archipelago at the end of the world in the Maori language.

New Zealand has a very good reputation. And above all, it fascinates. By its location at the very edge of the planet, by its almost unreal natural beauty. Its mountains, tropical and sub-Antarctic forests, fjords, beaches and geothermal springs. Landscapes so unique that they have been used as backdrops for some of the world's most successful films. And let's not forget its people, starting with the proud Maoris. Their war dances (hakas) are now famous the world over. This is a country that will not easily disappoint its visitors - quite the contrary.

Did you know?

That New Zealand was the first country in the world to grant women the right to vote. That was in 1893.

The must-haves

  1. Hike the Alpine Crossing in Tangariro National Park, famous for its 3 volcanoes and turquoise lakes.
  2. Bathe in the thermal waters of Rotorua, one of the most important regions for the Maoris, and learn about their culture.
  3. Sail (by boat or kayak) in Milford Sound, one of the most beautiful fjords on the planet.
  4. Visit the Hobbit village, especially if you're a fan of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
  5. Discover and hike in the Mount Cook region and enjoy spectacular scenery (mountains, glaciers, lakes...).

Between us

  1. The sea is never far away, wherever you are in the country. So you can ski in the morning and swim in the afternoon.
  2. 496 km from the date line, the small village of Gisborne is the first to see each new day.
  3. New Zealand is a very safe country. Even animals are not dangerous. Only the sting of sandflies on the South Island can bother you.
  4. The national parks are managed by the DOC (Department of Conservation), which also offers travelers a fine network of cabins and campsites.
  5. The country is famous for its vineyards. Don't forget to book for tastings.

When to go?

During the austral summer, from November to April. Temperatures are very pleasant, and the weather is generally dry and sunny. However, the climate is very different in the north (semi-tropical) and south (temperate, even cold) of this long archipelago.

Packing

New Zealanders dress casually. And that's what you need to discover the country: practical, comfortable clothes. For hot days and for colder ones, especially in the south. Always pack a parka, to protect you from the rain and the sun. And a bathing suit for the hot springs.
