Norway

In the land of the midnight sun

From the fjords of the south to the ice of the north, you can admire some of the most beautiful landscapes on the planet, magnified by each season. Here, summer is magical, winter is enchanting.

A legacy of the last Ice Age, the Norwegian landscape is one of the most sculpted and beautiful in the world. From the mountains of the interior to the ocean, ice and torrents have patiently planed and jagged the land, which has broken up into a myriad of islands, forming the most fantastic of natural labyrinths. It's also the land of the eternal sun, where light takes on a thousand shades in summer, but also of endless night. A land that is now unusually ice-free at these high latitudes, and owes its climate to the last breaths of the Gulf Stream.

Ideal for

Trekking, cultural activities, water sports, fishing, mountaineering, winter sports.

Did you know?

In winter, Norwegians keep a room in their house lit at all times, a tradition dating back to the days when fishermen could find their way back to port in the dark of night.

The must-haves

  1. See these strange standing wooden churches («stavkirke»), straight out of the Viking Age.
  2. Stay in the Lofoten Islands, a magnificent archipelago 200 km north of the Arctic Circle, and admire the midnight sun.
  3. Take the Atlantic route by bike or car.
  4. Sail the fjords in the south of the country, then follow the Troll Route.
  5. Hike and then climb to the pulpit rock (Prekestolen), 600 m above Lysefjord.

Between us

  1. The Coastal Express, a postal ship equipped with cabins, links Bergen to the Russian border every day, with stopovers lasting from one to 3 hours. An unforgettable experience, book well in advance.
  2. In Norway, everything is designed to be comfortable and welcoming for families, from the playrooms on the trains to the free, spotless toilets along the roads.
  3. Don't forget public transport, with its efficient ferries, coaches and trains, to reach these often sublime spots.
  4. Norway is an expensive country, but there are many ways to stay here at a lower cost: stay at a campsite (most offer hard-shell cabins), or in the open air (wild camping is allowed everywhere), eat a dish of the day for lunch, take a flask to enjoy the free fountains and water points...

When to go?

The Norwegian climate is highly variable, but milder on the coasts and islands than inland. Summers are drier and temperatures can rise above 25°C. Preferable unless you're into snow sports.

Packing

In summer, light clothing to protect against rain and sudden chills. Good walking shoes when leaving the cities. Take mosquito repellent with you to Lapland. In winter, take layers of clothing, favoring technical materials and wool, a warm, waterproof jacket, hat and gloves.
