Peru

From 0 to 6000 metres

Few countries manage to mix genres, colors and landscapes as well as Peru. From misty desert coasts to Andes plateaus illuminated by over-saturated skies, the route takes the traveler from 0 to 6,000 meters!

Peru is marked by almost every climate on the planet. There is a striking contrast between the vast deserts bordering the Pacific and the dense forests of the Amazon. In between are several mountain ranges, the high plateaus (altiplano) where the Inca civilization flourished, and the immense Lake Titicaca, remnant of an inland sea. This is the land of llamas and vicuñas, of villages where time seems to have no hold, of a people both shy and endearing.

Ideal for

Cultural, trekking, cooking classes, language courses, shopping, water sports.

Did you know?

That the Cotahuasi canyon, 400 km northwest of Arequipa, is the deepest canyon on the planet.

The must-haves

  1. Stay in Cuzco and see Machu Picchu, voted one of the 7 Wonders of the Modern World.
  2. Stay on the floating islands of Lake Titicaca.
  3. Hiking in the Cordillera Blanca, surrounded by 6000 m peaks.
  4. Head deep into the Amazon jungle and visit Manu National Park.
  5. Visit Lima and its magnificent museums and stay in Miraflores, one of its most attractive oceanfront districts.
  6. Admire -if possible from the air- the mysterious Nazca lines.

Between us

  1. A third of the country is mountainous, which explains the country's incredible diversity of climates and immense trekking possibilities.
  2. Surfers know it: in northern Peru, the Chicama wave is the longest left-hand wave in the world. It's 4 km long and can be surfed for over a minute!
  3. If you want to perfect your Spanish, take advantage of this opportunity, as the Spanish spoken in Peru is very pure and gentle.
  4. Peru abounds in more confidential wonders, such as the cloud city of Kuélap, hidden 3100 m above the forest. A perfect alternative to Machu Picchu.

When to go?

April to October, the period corresponding to the austral winter. On the other hand, Lima is best appreciated from December to April, when coastal fog (garua) is less prevalent.

Packing

Because of the incredible variety of climates and altitudes, you'll need clothes for all weathers and temperatures. The ideal: dress in layers that can be easily removed or added. Add good walking shoes, rain gear and even an anorak, gloves and hat for stages at altitude.
