Poland

In the east

With its mountains, immense beaches, vast forests and thousands of lakes, Poland boasts some of the wildest nature on the continent, and is a permanent invitation to outdoor activities. As for the cities, many of them are well worth a citytrip.

Like a phoenix, Poland has repeatedly risen from the ashes. Today, it's a fascinating, astonishing and endearing destination. With an impressive heritage. There are countless sites, both human and natural, on the Unesco list. As for the Poles, they're a bit like the Latins of the Slavic countries, and if they know how to have fun, they've developed a gastronomy of which they have nothing to be ashamed. And they'll be proud that, as a traveler, you're interested in their culture and monuments.

Ideal for

Cultural, trekking, winter sports, golf, shopping, nature, water sports.

Did you know?

In Poland, instead of one's birthday, one celebrates the day of the patron saint linked to one's first name.

The must-haves

1. A citytrip to Krakow. Ehen you enter the old town, you're opening a history book: almost all the buildings date back to the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

2. Survey the underground salt city of Wieliczka. The scenery is breathtaking: chapels carved from salt, underground lakes, halls covered with immense frameworks and wooden staircases.

3. Visit Gdansk, a Hanseatic port city with a rich history, famous for its amber trade.

4. Reconstructed after the last war, Warsaw is nonetheless a very pleasant and pretty European capital.

5. Unesco world heritage site, Białowieża is one of Europe's last primary forests. It is home to a herd of wild bison.

Between us

1. Poland also boasts some very fine white sandy beaches along the Baltic coast.

2. On the streets, and more specifically in the Krakow region, try Polish bagels, «obwarzanek», with sesame, poppy seeds or cheese.

3. High latitudes mean that summer days are very long indeed: nearly 17 hours in Warsaw.

4. Polish is ranked as one of the world's most difficult languages, but fortunately most of the population speaks English very well.

When to go?

From spring to autumn, for the longest, sunniest days. But also in winter if you want to ski or enjoy snow-covered landscapes.

Packing

Here, the seasons are marked. Summer can be very hot: pack light clothes and something to cover up in case of rain or cooler evenings. In winter, dress in warm layers, with good shoes and/or lined boots.
