Slovenia

A postcard destination

Welcome to a country where every step you take plunges you into the heart of luxuriant nature, in an environment resolutely focused on sustainability.

Slovenia doesn't get much press. Known as the little Switzerland of the Balkans, it has long been cramped between its powerful Italian, Germanic and Slavic neighbors. Today, this small country stands out for the magnificence of its nature and landscapes, and above all for the protection it affords them. High mountains, vast forests, mountain lakes, vineyards, not to mention its Mediterranean coastline - it's amazing what you can discover in such a small area. And to top it all off, Slovenians love to eat, and their specialities are truly gourmet.

Ideal for

Cultural, seaside, shopping, outdoor sports, winter sports, honeymoon, gastronomy, cooking classes, trekking.

Did you know?

That in Slovenia you can kayak 700 metres underground, in the galleries of a former zinc and lead mine (www.podzemljepece.com).

The must-haves

  1. Stop off in Ljubljana, a charming, rather quiet pocket capital ranked among Europe's safest cities.
  2. Enter the bowels of the earth at Postojna and visit Europe's largest cave complex.
  3. Pamper yourself at Rogaška Slatina, Dobrna Spa and Terme Olimia Spa.
  4. Get close to the peaks and enjoy the joys of winter sports. Slovenia is renowned for its high-quality ski areas.
  5. On the other side of the country, sunbathe on the coast in the pretty Venetian towns of Piran and Koper.
  6. Discover the wooden houses of Velika Planina, an astonishing shepherds' village perched at an altitude of over 1600 m.

Between us

  1. Slovenian cuisine is strongly influenced by Italy and Austria. It blends the variety of local products (freshwater fish, game, poultry and cold meats, mushrooms...) with borrowings from its neighbors.
  2. Slovenia's coastline isn't very extensive, but it's dotted with charming, sunny towns.
  3. Slovenia boasts some of Europe's best rafting spots, in the Soča Valley.
  4. Consider Ski Pas Slovenia, which gives access to all the country's ski resorts (there are over 40).

When to go?

From spring to autumn, if you want to take advantage of the fine weather. But also in winter, to enjoy the joys of skiing in the mountains.

Packing

Slovenia has a continental climate. Light clothing is essential in summer, but in winter you'll need to bring something to keep warm, as temperatures can easily fall below freezing.
