Tanzania

On the trail of Africa's giants

With some of the most beautiful landscapes on Earth, Tanzania takes the traveler on a fabulous zoological getaway. If you want to experience the most beautiful animal scenes and shiver with happiness in the savannah, this is definitely the place to go.

Tanzania is a magnificent encapsulation of the best that Africa has to offer. It's a mythical country packed with equally mythical places: firstly, the graceful Kilimanjaro, the continent's highest peak; secondly, the Great Rift Valley, the cradle of mankind; thirdly, the Serengeti Park, home to millions of herbivores, and fourthly, the fantastic Ngorongoro Crater, an immense Garden of Eden for the great savannah fauna. Not forgetting Lake Victoria, a myriad of natural parks spread across the country, or Zanzibar and Pemba, languorous spice islands fringed by white sand beaches.

Ideal for

Discovering wildlife, image hunters, sunbathing, meeting another culture.

Did you know?

That the «Big Five» came out of Ernest Hemingway's imagination in «The Snows of Kilimanjaro». It includes the lion, the leopard, the elephant, the buffalo and the black rhinoceros.

The must-haves

  1. Attempt a complete photographic «Big Five».
  2. Watch the incredible wildebeest migration.
  3. Climb Mount Kilimanjaro.
  4. Sail the Indian Ocean on a traditional dhow.
  5. Take a seaside break on Zanzibar's dream beaches.

Between us

  1. It is forbidden to enter a park without a guide-driver. You should also be aware that agencies negotiate lower prices with lodges than private individuals can ever obtain. It is therefore advisable to use a tour operator to organize your safari.
  2. On safari, an SLR camera and a good lens (minimum 400 mm) with stabilizer are essential for capturing animals on the move.
  3. Don't forget the lesser-known reserves, such as the immense Selous in the south of the country.

When to go?

May to October. There is a short rainy season in November and December, but this means that the parks are less crowded.

Packing

Loose-fitting, lightweight clothing. Long sleeves and light colors are preferable (black attracts mosquitoes and horseflies) in malaria zones. Cover up as soon as it gets dark, when malaria-carrying mosquitoes are at their worst. Anti-mosquito products and sun creams. Dollars rather than euros. American currency is even required to pay park entrance fees.
