Thailand

In the land of smiles

Promising smiles galore and dreamy landscapes and beaches, Thailand is the ideal Asian destination.

Thailand is the gateway for those new to Asia. Welcoming and accessible to all budgets, Thailand has it all. Starting with its hospitable people, but also its cuisine, considered one of the best in the world, and its varied, lush, colorful and never-tiring landscapes. Thailand is also a multi-faceted country. There's the ultramodern city you discover on landing in Bangkok. Then there's the South, with its islands and white-sand beaches, and its rocks set in the sea. And finally, there's the North, with its ancient kingdoms and colourfully-dressed hill tribes.

Ideal for

Seaside holidays, relaxing holidays, scuba diving, water sports, trekking, honeymoons, cookery courses.

Did you know?

That in Thailand, we eat a lot of insects: roasted grasshoppers, bamboo worms, silkworms, termites, cockroaches, crickets... to be tasted in street stalls.

The must-haves

  1. Stroll through the sprawling city of Bangkok, where ultra-modern buildings stand side by side with temples and islands of old quarters criss-crossed by khlongs.
  2. Head north to Chiang Mai, former capital of the Lanna kingdom, and explore the Golden Triangle.
  3. Relax on the white sands of the Krabi peninsula and take a pirogue trip on the turquoise seas.
  4. Hike in national parks such as Khao Sok or Khao Yai and admire the flora and fauna.
  5. Get drunk on Khmer art at Phanom Rung, a great alternative to Angkor.

Between us

  1. Try your hand at the local soccer game, «takraw». The game consists of keeping a woven wicker ball in the air without using your hands. It's often spectacular, even acrobatic, and great fun to watch.
  2. During the Loy Krathong festival in November, the rivers (and sea) are covered with small boats on which Thais place candles, flowers and a few pieces of fingernail, to wash away the year's bad luck. Then the sky lights up with myriads of flying lanterns that gently rise into the night.
  3. Succumb to a traditional massage, one of Thailand's most widespread traditional therapies.
  4. Thai cuisine is one of the best in the world, and Thailand is a huge open-air restaurant. The streets are full of street vendors offering extra street food.

When to go?

Mid-November to March, the driest and warmest season, except in the southern Gulf of Thailand. Some islands even remain closed during the rainy season.

Packing

Light, casual clothing, with a few more covering pieces and easy-to-remove shoes (flip-flops) for temple visits. Foldable rain gear. And a good tropical mosquito repellent. Save room, as the shopping temptations here are endless.
