Turkey

1001 wonders in one country

Straddling Europe and Asia, Turkey subtly blends the charms and multiple facets of the East with those of the West.

A trip to Turkey means walking in the footsteps of history. Hittites, Phrygians, Lycians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans - so many civilizations have succeeded one another, each leaving behind major sites to discover. Istanbul, ancient Constantinople, is an incredible city, straddling two continents and bustling with activity. But it's off the beaten track that you're most likely to fall in love with this country. From the Bosphorus to Cappadocia, from Anatolia to the Black Sea, you'll come across a wide variety of landscapes and even climates. Everywhere, a hospitality that is also reflected in the country's refined gastronomy, another major asset in deciding to discover it.

Ideal for

Seaside, shopping, cultural, golf, water sports, city trips, cruises, cooking classes, winter sports.

Did you know?

That it was the Turks who introduced coffee to Europe. Along with tea, it's their national drink.

The must-haves

  1. Let yourself be enchanted by the magic of the Orient in the bazaars of Istanbul or other cities in the country.
  2. Take a sailing cruise aboard a gület, a traditional wooden ship, and cruise from secluded beach to quiet port.
  3. Visit the ancient city of Ephesus, one of the best preserved in the country.
  4. Get lost in the troglodytic cities of Cappadocia and fly over it in a hot-air balloon.
  5. Enjoy the pleasures of swimming on the most beautiful beaches of the Aegean coast, such as Patara.
  6. Discover Pamukkale's immaculate hot springs and natural pools.

Between us

  1. Turkey is a family destination. Many hotels offer discounts (and even free accommodation up to the age of 6) for children staying in their parents' room.
  2. Climates vary greatly from region to region: for example, you can go rafting in the north-east of the country, or skiing in Uludag.
  3. Renting a vehicle is an option for visiting the country, but be careful, especially at night. Freeways are often toll roads: however, you can only pay with a magnetic HGS karti card, which you can obtain from banks, post offices or some petrol stations.
  4. Mezze, kebab, loukoums, poussins, grilled meats... and an infinite variety of spices... Turkish cuisine is one of the most varied in the world.

When to go?

In summer to enjoy the pleasures of the seaside (July and August are very popular), but in between seasons for citytrips or hiking. Winter for skiing.

Packing

In summer, light, comfortable clothes and a vest for the evenings, especially in Anatolia. This will protect you from the sun. Don't forget to bring a few covering garments for religious sites. Winters can be harsh and snowy in the highlands and even in Istanbul. On the coast, it's the rainy season.
