Uganda

Gorillas and big cats

At the junction of two worlds, that of the dense equatorial forests and that of the savannahs, Uganda stretches between the two branches of the Great Rift.

Long gone are the days of civil war and the horrors of Amin Dada's dictatorship. Today, Uganda is one of the most welcoming and interesting countries in Black Africa. Between great lakes, snow-capped peaks, savannahs, marshes, volcanoes and dense forests, the country is full of surprises. With its incredible variety of ecosystems, from giant primates to the Big Five and huge bird populations, this is one of the few destinations that offers the opportunity to see it all at once. Here, the show is guaranteed 100% nature.

Ideal for

Safari, trekking, cultural, photo, rafting, kayaking.

Did you know?

Kampala, the capital, is hit by storms more than 240 days a year.

The must-haves

  1. Take a safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park in search of climbing lions.
  2. Trek in search of mountain gorillas in the Bwindi forest, home to half the world's population of the species.
  3. See the impressive Murchison Falls on the Nile and go on safari in the national park.
  4. Walking with chimpanzees in the Kibale forest.
  5. Take a water safari on the Kazinga Canal, linking Lake Edward and Lake George.

Between us

  1. An intelligent, powerful animal, the chimpanzee develops the strength of four men. And the gorilla the strength of 8 men.
  2. Gorilla watching is always accompanied by armed guards in case of forest elephant attacks.
  3. Take the time to enjoy a few days on the shores of the great lakes in the west of the country.
  4. If you'd like to donate equipment, clothing or other items, talk to your guide (if you'd like to stop off at a school or a remote village). Above all, don't give anything directly to the children, who will quickly become beggars and drop out of school.

When to go?

July to September for the eastern region and around the capital. December to February for western Uganda and the Murchison Falls and Kidepo Valley parks.

Packing

Light clothing all year round, safari outfits in neutral colors (but never battle dress for obvious safety reasons) in the bush, not forgetting a sweater for cooler evenings at altitude.
