United States

United States

Between myth and reality

To cross the Atlantic is to enter another world. A world we think we know from Hollywood productions, but which turns out to be far richer and more fascinating.

Often presented as an El Dorado, the United States is above all one of the most diverse countries on the planet. In addition to the country's rich mix of cultures, it's the variety of its landscapes and climates that will leave visitors breathless. From the deserts of the West to the snowy valleys of the Northeast, from the vineyards of California to the vastness of the Middle West, from the unique geological formations of the Rockies to the swamps and white-sand beaches of Florida, it's a land of the world that awaits you. And while national sentiment and patriotism are deeply rooted here, and Americans are proud of their success stories, prosperity and creativity, they are also reputed to be among the friendliest people in the world.

Ideal for

Shopping, trekking, water sports, outdoor sports, culture, golf, seaside holidays, mountaineering, winter sports, honeymoons.

Did you know?

That thanks to its layer of tomato paste, pizza is considered a vegetable in the United States. Which is the world's leading consumer.

The must-haves

  1. Western national parks, from the most famous to the most confidential.
  2. Stay in Washington DC, the tranquil capital, and discover its countless museums.
  3. Take a road trip on mythical roads.
  4. Soak up the unique atmosphere of the Deep South, between New Orleans and the Carolinas.
  5. See New York and major eastern cities such as Boston and Philadelphia.

United States

Between us

  1. In the USA, distances are expressed in miles (1 mile = 1.6 km) and gasoline is sold by the gallon (1 gallon = 3.8 liters).
  2. Many hotels charge compulsory resort fees. They give access to facilities such as WiFi, swimming pool, gym...
  3. Access to national parks is subject to a fee. The price is set per vehicle. If you're visiting more than one, take the «America the Beautiful» pass, which gives you access to most of them.
  4. Don't be surprised if someone makes conversation with you: talking to strangers or travelers is perfectly normal for an American.
  5. Here, we like extralarge, especially in restaurants: portions will always be larger than in Europe.

When to go?

From spring to autumn, the USA is full of surprises: cherry blossoms on the East Coast, warm sunny days all summer long, blazing foliage as soon as Indian summer arrives.

Packing

Be careful, as the climate can vary enormously from one region to another. Take both light and warmer clothing, swimwear and comfortable shoes. Americans live casually. What's more, you'll always be able to find inexpensive local clothing.
