Azores

Portugal

9 worlds in one

We're all familiar with its famous anticyclone, synonymous with fine weather! But did you know that it's also an archipelago of 9 islands 1500 km west of Portugal? A little-known, surprising and exciting destination!

Each of the nine islands in this archipelago is different. A real miniature world tour! Meadows perched between mountain and ocean recall Ireland, lava fields Iceland, cedar forests Japan, vineyards planted in ash the Italian island of Pantelleria, giant tree ferns New Zealand. And the virgin forest takes us back to the subtropical Atlantic. Everywhere, flowers galore: bluish hydrangeas, agapanthus, azaleas, rhododendrons, strelitzias... The Azores? A paradise. For lovers of nature and tranquillity, for sports enthusiasts and families.

Ideal for

Seaside holidays, scuba diving, water sports, wildlife watching, culture, trekking, photography.

Did you know?

That the volcano on the island of Pico (2350 m), a gigantic, almost perfect grey cone, is Portugal's highest peak.

The must-haves

  1. Stop to observe the volcanic phenomena: fumaroles, hot springs and mud pots remind us that we're right on the fault line that separates Europe, Africa and America.
  2. See Sete Cidades, a volcano caldera on the island of Sao Miguel now covered by two lakes of different colors: green and blue!
  3. Visit Angra, on the island of Terceira. Listed as a World Heritage Site, it's already reminiscent of Brazil's colonial towns.
  4. Stay in the small port of Horta (island of Faial), known to all sailors. And from there, set off to observe sperm whales (and dolphins) at sea!

Between us

  1. The magnificent islands of Flores and Corvo, in the far west, are the last lands before America.
  2. The Azores are home to Europe's only truly delicious tea.
  3. In the Azores, you can bathe just about anywhere in the many natural pools dug out of the lava and filled by the tides. Or in geothermal pools heated by volcanoes.
  4. The cost of living is very low: take advantage of this to eat out often.

When to go?

All year round: from 14°C in winter to 24°C in summer, average temperatures are tempered by the ocean. Humidity averages 80%, giving the impression that temperatures are 2°C higher than they actually are.

Packing

Light clothing, but also a few warmer items and a rain jacket, as the weather here can change very quickly. Never set off on an excursion without your swimsuit and good walking shoes.
