Cyprus

Stopover on the island of Aphrodite

Here's a generous, atypical island that's a complete change of scenery for those who take the trouble to get off the beaten track.

We love the endless beaches, the lively streets of Nicosia or Paphos, but also the mountainous hinterland for a breath of fresh air and the Mediterranean nightlife. Cyprus will prove truly endearing to those who take the trouble to meet its people and sample their hospitality, to enter the high-perched monasteries of the Troodos, to linger in the narrow streets of its mountain villages and breathe in the fresh air of the cedar- and pine-covered valleys that run from Mount Olympus. As a good ex-British protectorate, you drive on the left-hand side of the road; in the south of the island, Greek is quite different from that spoken in Greece, and in the north, Turkish; you can enjoy oriental mezzes as well as loukoums, and mosques stand side by side with churches.

Ideal for

Water sports, seaside holidays, cultural activities, hiking.

Did you know?

Until March, it's often possible to ski on the slopes of Mount Olympus, which has several ski lifts. Skiing in the morning, beach time in the afternoon - it's all possible.

The must-haves

  1. Take a stroll through the narrow, winding streets of Lefkara, stopping to admire the work of the lace-makers, and don't forget to visit the small «Beautiful Lefkara» loukoum-making workshop.
  2. On the south coast, Gouverneur beach offers the contrast of black sand and white chalk cliffs.
  3. Kourion was an important ancient city-kingdom. Today, it is one of the island's most spectacular archaeological sites, with its theater facing the sea.
  4. From the south coast, pretty roads climb up to the Troodos massif, linking superb villages.
  5. Enjoy a genuine Cypriot mezze in a village restaurant.

Between us

  1. In a taverna, you're sure to taste purely Cypriot cuisine, while in a restaurant, you'll find far more international dishes. As for the exokhiko kendron, this is where you'll find the gastronomy of the countryside.
  2. Visit a monastery on a religious holiday: Easter and Christmas (which are rarely on the same date as Catholic holidays), or even one of the two national holidays.
  3. Try to catch a performance under the stars at the Kourion amphitheater, for example.

When to go?

Spring, when the countryside is still green and covered with flowers. The sun is generous but not excessive. And above all, few tourists and an even more charming welcome. For more blazing sun, prefer summer until October.

Packing

Light clothing all summer, including a woollen jacket for the altitude and something to cover legs and arms if visiting religious sites. Warmer clothes for other seasons.
