Iceland

The origins of the world

Straddling Europe and America, Iceland sometimes seems to have sprung from another planet. A mythical island that leaves no one indifferent, where nature offers a permanent spectacle in XXL format, and where a trip is still an adventure.

A skilful blend of water, ice, earth and fire, Iceland takes us back to the origins of the world. It's as if all the forces buried at the center of the planet have found free rein here to express themselves. Volcanoes have designed and dressed the rocks in colors skilfully blended by the brush of time. Planed, worn and often bare, the earth here is sometimes hard, sometimes fragile. Erosion never ceases to work it: frost weakens and cracks it, water washes and re-washes it, the wind reduces it to dust, whirls it around and carries it further away, fire reshapes it. Far from being monotonous, Iceland's landscapes never cease to renew and fascinate: tabular mountains, slopes carpeted with red, yellow or brown lava, bright green meadows dotted with sheep, black sand plains, glaciers and even forests... Welcome to a fascinating island in perpetual mutation.

Ideal for

Fans of photography, an ultra-disorienting minitrip or a citytrip in the world's most northerly capital; lovers of wide open spaces, a breath of fresh air, a road trip, trekking, horseback riding or exploring ice caves.

Did you know?

That Icelandic surnames vary from generation to generation, since they are made up of the father's first name extended by the word «son of» or «daughter of». And that it is forbidden to give a non-Icelandic name to a child.

The must-haves

  1. Iceland is a paradise for hikers, whether you opt for a leisurely stroll or an extreme trek.
  2. Sailing Europe's only glacial lagoon.
  3. Admire some of the most powerful waterfalls on the planet.
  4. Marvel at the expulsion of a geyser.
  5. Bathing in a natural hot spring.

Between us

1. Public transport is poorly developed, rental cars are essential and 4×4 vehicles are mandatory on the F trails in the interior.

2. Tap water is safe to drink, despite its sulphurous taste. Hot water, on the other hand, has to be cooled as it is extracted directly from the ground.

3. Residuals of the solar wind that fade into magnificent curtains of light in the atmosphere, the aurora borealis can only be observed in winter. As they are most visible around the poles, Iceland is a prime spot.

When to go?

Early summer and September are sunny months, graced with the colors of autumn. From April to October, the days are very long. The midnight sun floods the island with light, and even in the dead of night, it's never completely dark.

Packing

Iceland is not the North Pole: summer temperatures rarely exceed 20°C, but the average January temperature in Reykjavik is 0°C. On the other hand, the weather can change very quickly and requires the utmost vigilance, especially when hiking. So make sure you wear layers and good shoes. You'll also need casual clothes for evenings out in Reykjavik. And a good mosquito repellent if you're staying in the north and around Lake Myvatn.
