Straddling Europe and America, Iceland sometimes seems to have sprung from another planet. A mythical island that leaves no one indifferent, where nature offers a permanent spectacle in XXL format, and where a trip is still an adventure.
Straddling Europe and America, Iceland sometimes seems to have sprung from another planet. A mythical island that leaves no one indifferent, where nature offers a permanent spectacle in XXL format, and where a trip is still an adventure.
A skilful blend of water, ice, earth and fire, Iceland takes us back to the origins of the world. It's as if all the forces buried at the center of the planet have found free rein here to express themselves. Volcanoes have designed and dressed the rocks in colors skilfully blended by the brush of time. Planed, worn and often bare, the earth here is sometimes hard, sometimes fragile. Erosion never ceases to work it: frost weakens and cracks it, water washes and re-washes it, the wind reduces it to dust, whirls it around and carries it further away, fire reshapes it. Far from being monotonous, Iceland's landscapes never cease to renew and fascinate: tabular mountains, slopes carpeted with red, yellow or brown lava, bright green meadows dotted with sheep, black sand plains, glaciers and even forests... Welcome to a fascinating island in perpetual mutation.
1. Public transport is poorly developed, rental cars are essential and 4×4 vehicles are mandatory on the F trails in the interior.
2. Tap water is safe to drink, despite its sulphurous taste. Hot water, on the other hand, has to be cooled as it is extracted directly from the ground.
3. Residuals of the solar wind that fade into magnificent curtains of light in the atmosphere, the aurora borealis can only be observed in winter. As they are most visible around the poles, Iceland is a prime spot.
