Oman

In the Sultanate of 1001 Nights

Welcome to the land of Sindbad and the Queen of Sabah! Starry nights and burning sands, fortified oases and the incense tree...

40 years ago, this country (as big as the UK) was still in the Middle Ages: just one hospital and three doctors, a few kilometers of roads, no telephone, electricity or radio. Oman has succeeded in blending tradition and modernity at lightning speed. Today, you'll discover a curious blend of Arabia, Africa (notably in dances and instruments), India (fabrics and jewelry) and even England. When it comes to local color, you're in for a treat, as all Omanis still wear the traditional dishdasha (dress) and koma (hat). And in the hinterland, the elders still proudly display the khanjar (curved dagger) and sometimes even the rifle.

Ideal for

Wildlife watching, 4×4 excursions, beach holidays, trekking, canyoning, water sports, scuba diving, golf.

Did you know?

That the southern province of Dhofar is part of happy Arabia, watered from June to September by the monsoon. On the menu: lush valleys, fat meadows, mountains covered in verdant forests, gurgling rivers!

The must-haves

  1. Dune bashing, off-roading in a 4 x 4 in the dunes of the Wahiba desert.
  2. Experience a bivouac in the desert or on the beach at Ras al Jinz.
  3. Visit the incense souk in Salalah.
  4. Visit one of the country's many caves, including Majlis-al-Jhinn, the largest in the world.
  5. Dazzle at the egg-laying green turtles, which still come by the thousands every year.

Between us

  1. There's haggling everywhere, even at the shopping mall, but here there's no harassment for commercial gain, no aggression, the people are frankly open-minded.
  2. Those expecting the architectural extravagance of Dubai or Abu Dhabi will be in for a surprise: no outlandish skyscrapers here, as buildings higher than 6 storeys are forbidden.
  3. Besieged by internal and external enemies (China, Persia, Europe, Africa), Oman had to build a network of forts and towers. There are still over a thousand of them scattered throughout the country.

When to go?

From April to October, the mercury soars, reaching temperatures of 48°C. People only go out in the evening. In winter, temperatures average over 20°C.

Packing

Very light but covering clothing. Between December and March, evenings can be a little cooler, so bring a sweater. In Oman, English plugs are used (bring an adapter).
